TROY, N.Y.—No. 14/12 Dartmouth men's hockey defeated RPI 3-1 on Friday night in Troy, N.Y.
The first period didn't see a goal as the teams looked for the goal with a combined 20 shots.
4:55 into the second period, RPI opened the scoring with an even strength goal.
The Big Green answered less than two minutes later at the 6:19 mark as Cam MacDonald scored his fifth goal of the season. Eric Charpentier fired a stretch pass to Hayden Stavroff who gained the RPI zone and weaved through defenders. He then dropped it to MacDonald who went bar-down with a wrist shot to tie the game at one.
At the 15:06 mark the Big Green took the 2-1 lead. Tim Busconi fired a pass from the defensive zone to Joshua Schenk at the RPI blueline. Schenk then found a streaking Stavroff on the right side. He took the pass and buried his nation leading 23rd goal of the season. Schenk notched his second assist of the year while it was Busconi's fourth assist.
2:32 later the Big Green took the 3-1 lead as Stavroff scored his 24th goal of the season. The Big Green wore down the Engineers and had pressure in the RPI zone. Hank Cleaves fired a cross-ice pass to Busoni on the left point. Busconi skated to the top of the left circle and fired a shot-pass to Stavroff in the slot. Stavroff redirected the pass into the net to make it 3-1. Busconi notched his fifth assist while H. Cleave picked up his team leading 19th assist.
The Big Green outshot RPI 13-7 in the second period as shots were tied at 20 after 40 minutes of play.
Both teams looked for the next goal in the third period, but neither team found the back of the net. RPI edged out the Big Green 11-10 in shots in the third period but the Big Green held onto the two-goal lead.
Roan Clarke started in net for the Big Green and made 30 saves as he picked up his eighth win of the season.
The Big Green blocked 13 shots in the game with Colin Grable blocking a team high three shots. Eric Charpentier blocked two shots.
Stavroff scored his 23rd and 24th against RPI, it is the most goals a Big Green player has scored 24 goals in a season since Ross Brownridge scored 25 goals in the 1978-79 season. He tallied his second straight three point game, he has points in four of his last five games. In those five games he has nine points.
H. Cleaves is on a three game point streak and has points in five of the last six games. Dating back to Dec. 28 against Arizona State he has 17 points in 14 games.
With the win, the Big Green clinched an opening round bye in the ECAC Tournament and secured a top four seed.
The Big Green play their final road game of the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 21 at Union. Faceoff is set for 5 PM at M&T Bank Center in Schenectady, N.Y.
