SCHENECTADY, N.Y.—No. 14/12 Dartmouth men's hockey tied Union 3-3 and won the shootout 2-0 on Saturday evening in the final road game of regular season.
8:21 into the game Hayden Stavroff scored his nation leading 25th goal of the year. The Big Green had the puck controlled in the Union zone and Matt Fusco played it to Cam MacDonald in the right corner. MacDonald saw Stavroff camped in the slot, Stavroff one-timed the pass and beat the goalie far side. MacDonald notched his 14th assist while Fusco picked up his second assist of the season.
Neither team found the back of the net for the rest of the opening period. Shots were 12-10 Dartmouth in the opening period while faceoffs were tied at 10.
4:07 into the second period, Union tied the game at one while on the power play.
With 7:06 left in the second period, the Big Green took the 2-1 lead back. Stavroff scored his second goal of the night and 26th of the season. Hank Cleaves sped around the back of the Union net as he looked for a centering pass. As he reached the right faceoff circle he spotted Stavroff wide open in the slot. Stavroff blasted a one-timer home to make it 2-1. H. Cleaves picked up his team leading 20th assist of the season while Cooper Cleaves picked up a secondary assist.
Just under four minutes later, the Big Green made it a 3-1 lead. The play started with Jason Stefanek gaining the zone and finding Tim Busconi in the slot, Busconi took a shot and drove the net. The shot was saved but Andrew Clarke picked up the rebound and fired it towards the net. The shot was blocked but went to the corner, Clarke collected the rebound and passed it to Alex Krause. Krause one-timed it home for his third goal of the season. Clarke notched his ninth assist while it was Busconi's sixth.
Dartmouth took the two-goal lead to the locker room after scored twice and tallying 10 shots in the second period.
Union tied the game with goals at the 11:27 and 12:48 marks of the third period.
Shots were 11-11 in the third period but the game was tied at three after 60 minutes and the game went to overtime.
Both teams had possession time in the overtime frame but neither team could earn the win and the game officially ended in a tie.
In the shootout, Stavroff and Nikita Nikora scored while Emmett Croeau made two saves for the extra point.
Croteau made 36 saves in net for the Big Green including 15 in the second period. The Bonnyville, Alta. native now has a .919 save percentage.
Dartmouth blocked 15 shots in the game while Colin Grable blocked a game high four shots.
Eight different players tallied a point for the Big Green with Stavroff leading the way with two points. He's now tallied multiple points in three straight game and has 11 points in the last six games.
Dartmouth sits in second place in the ECAC standings with every team having a pair of games left. The Big Green are four points back of Quinnipiac for the top spot in the conference.
The Big Green host Quinnipiac on Friday, Feb. 27 at Thompson Arena before hosting Princeton on Saturday, Feb. 28 in the regular season finale. Both games are set for 7 PM starts and will be broadcasted on ESPN+.
