HANOVER, N.H.—No. 14/12 Dartmouth men's hockey defeated No. 7 Quinnipiac on Friday night 7-4 at Thompson Arena on the eve of the final day of the regular season.
The Big Green opened the scoring just 1:57 into the game as Alex Krause scored his fourth goal of the seoasn. The play started in the Dartmouth zone as the Big Green won a battle on the half wall and Krause broke the puck out. He fed it to Jason Stefanek who sped up the wall. He fed it back to Krause who threw a puck towards the net. Nathan Morin drove the net and was hooked but got a stick on it, the puck sat in front of the crease before Krause found the rebound and batted home the opening goal. Morin notched his sixth assist while it was Stafanek's ninth.
The Bobcats scored at the 14:31 mark of the frame to tie the game and took the lead with 15 seconds left in the first.
It took until the 15:04 mark of the second for another team to find the back of the net. CJ Foley fed a bank pass to Hank Cleaves as he gained speed in the Dartmouth zone. He flew through the neutral zone and gained the Quinnipiac zone while drawing three defenders. He dropped the puck to Hayden Stavroff who cut the middle of the ice and ripped a wrister into the back of the net for his nation leading 27th goal. H. Cleaves notched his team leading 21st assist while Foley picked up his 14th assist.
Quinnipiac answered back with 31 seconds left in the middle frame to take a 3-2 lead to the third period.
It took just 3:47 into the third period for the Big Green to answer. Jack Silverberg played a puck from the corner up to Tim Busconi at the point. Busconi took a shot that hit Brock Cummings in front of the net. The puck sat there until Nikita Nikora spun off his man and buried the loose puck for his seventh goal of the season. Cummings picked up his fifth assist while Busconi was credited with his seventh assist.
Less than two minutes later at the 5:15 mark, the Big Green took the lead and never looked back. Morin and Colin Grable went in on a two on one, when Morin took his shot, his stick exploded and the puck went below the goal line and Grable and Stefanek battled for possession. Stefanek poked the puck to Grable who found a wide-open Joshua Schenk in front of the net. Schenk netted his fourth goal of the year to make it 4-2 Big Green. Grable notched his 12th assist while it was Stefanek's 10th assist.
The scoring streak did not stop as the Big Green made it 5-3 at the 8:38 mark. The duo of Ryan Schelling and Schenk were on the forecheck and battled below the goal line. Schelling found the puck and fired a pass to the slot where Andrew Clarke received the pass. Clarke made no mistake and picked the top left corner for his second goal of the season. Schelling notched his fifth assist while it was Schenk's third of the season.
Quinnipiac got a goal back at the 10:06 mark to make it 5-4.
With 4:56 left, Quinnipiac went on the power play and pulled its goalie to make it six on four.
At the 16:08 mark, the Bobcats worked the puck around and took a one-timer from the left point, Silverberg blocked the shot perfectly and collected the puck. He picked up his head and fired the puck at the empty cage. He banked it off the left post and in for his fifth goal of the season.
1:40 later with the net still empty, Foley broke the puck out to Krause who found Silverberg just inside the Dartmouth blueline. He closed out the game with his second empty netter and sixth goal of the season. Krause notched his sixth assist while it was Foley's 15th.
The Big Green closed out the game for the win while Emmett Croteau ended the game with 22 saves. His improves to 11-4-3 on the season with a 2.14 goals against average and a .915 save percentage.
Foley, Schenk, Silverberg, Stefanek, and Krause all tallied two points in the win. In total 15 skaters tallied a point for the Big Green. Busconi finished the game with a +3 rating to lead the Big Green.
Dartmouth blocked 19 shots with Morin leading the way with four.
The Big Green won the faceoff battle as they went 36-31. Cummings won nearly 70% of his draws as he went 16-7 in the circle. Morin went 9-7 in his return to the lineup.
Dartmouth is now just one point back of Quinnipiac in the ECAC Hockey standings. The Big Green can win an outright ECAC regular season title with a regulation win and a Quinnipiac loss against Harvard of any kind.
