HANOVER, N.H.—No. 12 Dartmouth men's hockey opened the 2025-26 postseason with a 4-1 win over Colgate in the first game of the ECAC Quarterfinals.
The first period saw each team generate chances to start the game, but it was Colgate that took the 1-0 lead at the 7:53 mark of the first.
The Big Green answered back at the 12:10 mark. Colgate looked to breakout of their zone but the puck deflected off a Colgate forward and popped to the high slot. Ryan Schelling picked up the loose puck and picked the top right corner to tie the game at one. It was Schelling's sixth goal of the year while being his first career postseason goal.
Dartmouth tallied 12 shots in the opening frame while limiting Colgate to just four. Faceoffs were even at 12 wins each in the opening period.
In the second stanza the Big Green outshot the Raiders 14-9 but there was just one goal in the period. While on the power play, the Big Green took the lead at the 19:11 mark. There was a puck battle along the half wall and the puck popped out to Jack Silverberg. Silverberg fed the puck to CJ Foley at the point. The defensemen skated to the slot and fed a perfect pass to Hank Cleaves. H. Cleaves was at the bottom of the left circle and caught the pass and quickly ripped home his 15th goal of the year. Foley notched his 17th assist while it was Silverberg's seventh of the season.
Dartmouth took the 2-1 lead to the locker room and added to it just 1:25 into the third period. The Big Green had the puck below the Colgate goal line as Colin Grable and Cam MacDonald fought for the loose puck. MacDonald threw the puck from below the goaline to Hayden Stavroff who ripped a wrist shot towards the net, the first shot was saved but the rebound went behind the net. Grable picked up the loose puck and found Stavroff camped in the left circle and fed him a pass. Stavroff made no mistake as he fired home his nation leading 28th goal of the season. Grable picked up his 13th assist while MacDonald earned his 15th of the season.
Just over five minutes later at the 6:39 mark the Big Green added an insurance goal. Foley had the puck at the point and spun away from a Colgate player before leaving the puck for Stavroff. Stavroff skated towards the net before sliding a pass to H. Cleaves who was in the left faceoff circle. H. Cleaves fired the puck into the open net after the Colgate netminder was out of position for his 16th goal of the season. Both Stavroff and Foley notched their 18th assists of the year on the play.
Despite Colgate's push for a goal in the third period, the Big Green allowed just eight shots as they outshot the Raiders 11-8 and closed out the game with a 4-1 win.
Emmett Croteau saw 21 shots in the game and turned away 20 of them for his 12th win of the season. He is 12-4-4 this season with a 2.07 goals against average and a .916 save percentage.
Stavroff scored his 28th goal of the season on Friday, no Big Green player has scored more goals since Ross Brownridge '80 scored 30 goals in the 1979-80 season. He also tallied his 13th multi-point game of the season with a goal and an assist.
Both Foley and H. Cleaves tallied two point games for H. Cleaves it was his 10th multi-point game of the season while it was Foley's fourth.
Dartmouth went 30-28 in the faceoff circle as Brock Cummings won a team high 12 as he went 12-7.
The Big Green blocked 11 shots in the game as Cooper Cleaves and MacDonald led the way with two each.
Dartmouth now has 20 wins on the season, it is the most wins in a season since the Big Green won 20 games in 2004-05. The Big Green have not won 21 games since the 1947-48 season, 21 wins is a program record, it was first set in 1941-42 and tied in 1947-48.
The Big Green improve to 15-1-2 at Thompson Arena, Dartmouth last won 15 games at home in 2004-05 when they went 16-8-2 at home.
