This installment features midfielder Alyssa Neuberger of the women’s soccer team. Neuberger has started all 33 games since arriving on campus, scoring four goals to go with three assists. The native of Gremantown, Tennessee, provided two second-half goals against Albany last year in a 3-0 blanking of the Great Danes, two assists in a 4-2 win over Quinnipiac and ended the year third on the team with nine points.
DartmouthSports.com: If you could play another sport at Dartmouth, what would it be and why?
Alyssa Neuberger: I would run track. In high school, I was a two-time state champion in the 300m hurdles and state runner-up in the 4x400m relay.
DS: Other than your parents, who has had the greatest influence on your life?
AN: My high school track coach had the greatest impact on my life. He was very supportive of me in all aspects of my life.
DS: What has been your best on-field memory thus far in your Dartmouth career?
AN: My first game playing for the Big Green when I scored the winning goal in the last minutes of overtime.
DS: How is Hanover different or similar to where you grew up?
AN: I moved to Germantown, Tennessee, the summer before eighth grade. Before, that I lived in McKinney, a suburb of Dallas, Texas. Hanover is very different from both places. The first main difference is the weather. When I came onto campus freshman fall, I only brought a few sweatshirts and a wind breaker as jackets. I was definitely not prepared for the cold weather. The second main difference is that Hanover is more rural. Both McKinney and Germantown were stereotypical suburbs.
DS: What show do you binge watch?
AN: The Office. My two favorite episodes are 14 and 15 in season 5 (Stress Relief), when Dwight stages a fire in the office. I believe that its the best few minutes of comedy in television.
DS: What is your useless/hidden talent?
AN: Eating samples at Costco. I think that Costco is the greatest store to have ever existed. If there was an apocalypse, I would want to be stuck in Costco because Costco literally has everything. When I was in high school, my dad and I would go to Costco every Saturday and Sunday at noon because it was prime sample time. We would spend hours wandering the food section eating the samples.
DS: What are your plans for your upcoming off-term?
AN: Undecided thus far, but I am hoping to be in Boston with a consulting or finance internship.
DS: Do you have a nickname on your team? Who gave it to you and why?
AN: I don’t have a nickname at Dartmouth, but my nickname was Hammy growing up. The nickname comes from the energetic squirrel in movie Over the Hedge. My first soccer coach gave me the nickname when I was 7 and the nickname stuck throughout high school.
DS: What would be your best advice to your 15-year-old self?
AN: My best advice to my 15-year-old self would be a quote from Michelle Obama: “Always stay true to yourself and never let what somebody says distract you from your goals.” I think it’s a great, great quote.
