Throughout the summer, DartmouthSports.com will be focusing on members of the Class of 2020 who are currently in their "Sophomore Summers."
Â
This installment features midfielder Zach Kalk of the men's soccer team. Kalk is a rising junior who has been a part of a pair Ivy League championships already in his first two seasons in Hanover. Last summer, he was a member of the Canadian men's soccer team that represented the True North at the 2017 Maccabiah Games in Israel, alongside his brother Corey ’18, who was a member of the men's hockey team and recently graduated from Dartmouth.
DartmouthSports.com: What have you been doing during your sophomore summer?
Zach Kalk: There’s been a lot: taking classes, training very hard with fellow soccer players that are on campus, participating in DRIVE and fulfilling my role as president of Chi Heorot.
DS: What is your favorite place on campus?
ZK: Burnham Field – I love getting to the field and getting after it with the guys.
DS: What was it in the recruiting process that sold you on Dartmouth?
ZK: I loved the small-school feel, it’s obviously an incredible academic institution and the soccer team was also doing very well. Of course, having my brother here also played a huge role in my decision – I’ve always been incredibly close with him and once he told me how much he loved it, I couldn't wait to share the college experience with him.
DS: If you could swap places with one teammate, who would it be and why?
ZK: Wyatt Omsberg – someone who I have always looked up to on and off the field. He is an incredible soccer player and is now living the dream playing professional soccer; something I would like to do someday
DS: If you could play another sport at Dartmouth, what would it be and why?
ZK: Hockey – I played hockey my entire life (right up until I come to Dartmouth) and still have a passion for the sport. I am also very good friends with guys on the hockey team and I think it would be awesome to lace up the skates with them.
DS: If you participate in any service activities, what are they and how did you get involved?
ZK: Thetford Mentors – a program that many players on our soccer team have participated in. Each mentor gets paired up with a student from Thetford Elementary and we have lunch and recess together once a week throughout the term.
DS: Other than your parents, who has had the greatest influence on your life?
ZK: My brother Corey – since we were kids he would always give me advice and help me be a better person and athlete. We were also super competitive and played sports together all the time. This really allowed us to push each other and helped me become the athlete that I am today.
  Â
My grandfather played professional soccer in South Africa and was one of the all-time greats and still a leading goal scorer. His influence and my desire to follow in his footsteps has also been a driving force.
DS: What has been your best on-field memory thus far in your Dartmouth career?
ZK: Our win against Columbia this past fall. It was basically an Ivy clinching game as both teams were atop the league standings and they (Columbia) are always an incredibly tough opponent. I had some friends and family come visit and I played one of my best games in a Dartmouth jersey and got my first assist to help set up the game-winning goal.
DS: What show do you binge watch?
ZK: The Office is a show that I can watch all the time over and over. But I am currently watching
Billions with a couple guys on the team – by far one of the best shows I have ever watched.
DS: What are your post-Dartmouth plans?
ZK: To play professional soccer.
DS: What would be your best advice to your 15-year-old self?
ZK: Follow your dream and don’t let anyone tell you that you can and can’t achieve it. Be realistic, but put your heart and soul into it and never give up.
DS: If you could go anywhere in the world right now, where would you go and why?
ZK: To the World Cup in Russia
