Bio
Joy is an honor graduate of Punahou School in Honolulu whose most prominent alumnus is President Barack Obama. Joy won letters in Track, Soccer, Diving and Cross Country and was the Interscholastic League of Honolulu (private schools) Long Jump and Triple Jump Champion in both her Junior and Senior years. Joy also was the State Champion in her age group in the UST&F Junior Olympics Program for eleven straight years in one or more events including the jumps as well as distance events. At age 14 she placed 19th of 40 Triple Jumpers in her age group at the UST&F Junior Olympics Program National Championships in Indianapolis. Joy is a recipient of the Girl Scout Gold Award and served two years as the Senior Girl Scout Representative on the Hawaii State Girl Scout Council Board of Directors. Among her many HS awards was the Chinese Excellence award, coach's awards in track and soccer as well open ocean paddling with the Waikiki Yacht Club. Joy is planning to major in English but is also pre-Med.

Q and A with Joy
Why did you choose Dartmouth?
Coming from Hawaii, I had always known from a young age that I wanted to attend an East Coast school. What surprised me though was the immediate connection with Dartmouth that I felt upon my visits even before I made my decision. Dartmouth has a wonderful and thriving community atmosphere which immediately drew me in. Not only does Dartmouth have amazing academics, but the student body is such a welcoming and friendly group of people. Dartmouth is everything anyone could ask for in a college and so much more.
How long have you been competing in track and what got you interested?
It feels as though I have been doing track since even before I can remember. But I think I was around six when I joined the Hawaii Road Runners Military Youth Team. I had always been a very active kid and relished the idea of being able to practice and run with other kids my age.
Tell me something interesting about you that might come as a surprise to your teammates.
I did ballet from preschool up until my sophomore year in high school, but I still can’t do the splits.
What are your future plans, if any?
I want to attend medical school after undergraduate and hopefully become a pediatrician. But of course this isn’t set in stone and who knows what else might catch my interest throughout my college career!
What extra curricular activities are you involved in on campus?
I sing in the Dartmouth College Gospel Choir and am a member of Dartmouth EMS. I also help to run Dartmouth’s Hawaii Club and take advantage of the Shadowing Program at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center as a member of the Nathan Smith Society.
