Throughout the summer, DartmouthSports.com will be focusing on members of the Class of 2020 who are currently in their "Sophomore Summers."
This installment features Brandon De Otaduy of the men's squash team. He finished the 2017-18 season with an 8-8 record, playing primarily at the fifth position, helping the Big Green achieve their highest final national rank (fifth) in 14 years.
DartmouthSports.com: What have you been doing during your sophomore summer?
Brandon De Otaduy: I like to have a structured day with a lot of activities because if I have too much free time, I tend to be very unproductive. Since I don't have squash this term, I've tried to pack my schedule with things such as work shifts at the gym (I work at the front desk of Alumni Gym), workouts to stay fit and a lot of golf. I've also tried to enjoy the good weather by doing outdoor activities such as canoeing with friends.
DS: What was it in the recruiting process that sold you on Dartmouth?
BDO: I think it was the people that made up the team, both the coaches and the players. I played a tournament here my senior year of high school when I was in the final stages of getting recruited, and I was surprised when a bunch of guys on the team came up to me after one of the matches and introduced themselves. I knew that Dartmouth had a reputation for having a very open and welcoming team, and that gesture reinforced that idea in my head. Talking to the coaches during our phone conversations and when I visited campus for the first time, also made me realize that I wanted to be part of the culture both Hansi and Theo (the assistant coach at the time) had created.
DS: If you could play another sport at Dartmouth, what would it be and why?
BDO: I've been really into golf for the last two years so that's probably the sport I would choose. I had never played before my senior year of high school; I actually thought it was quite boring. However, I was hooked after the first round I played. It's such a frustrating game at times because it's so hard, but I think that's why I like it. I enjoy constantly working on my swing so I can get better.
DS: Outside of sports, what are you most passionate about?
BDO: I would definitely say technology, especially consumer electronics. For a long time I've loved reading and learning about all the new smartphones and computers that come out. If I could, I would own more than one phone and more than one computer so I could try different devices that I’m interested in.
DS: What has been your best on-court memory thus far in your Dartmouth career?
BDO: There's been many great moments, but I think the one that stands out the most is my first win. Our match was against Franklin and Marshall, and I was playing the number two position since our usual two was injured. I was a freshman, playing in a position higher than usual, and I was feeing pretty sick (I actually couldn’t play our next match because I had a fever). It was a tough match, but I eventually won 3-2 to get my first college squash win.
DS: How is Hanover different or similar to where you grew up?
BDO: I live in Queretaro, Mexico, right now, but I lived in Mexico City most of my life. Excluding the fact that the culture in Mexico City is very different to Hanover and the U.S. in general, Mexico City is pretty much the complete opposite of Hanover. I grew up in a very large city with constant traffic, where the air is very polluted, and where there is pretty much always something to do. Hanover on the other hand is very small, with no traffic, green spaces everywhere, clear skies most of the time, and definitely not as much to do.
DS: What's the app you use most on your phone?
BDO: Probably YouTube since that's where I spend a lot of my free time.
DS: What show do you binge watch?
BDO: Currently there isn't a show that I'm binge watching, but I did watch all of How I Met your Mother in like 2 weeks a few years ago.
DS: Do you have a nickname on your team? Who gave it to you and why?
BDO: I’ve gone through a bunch of nicknames throughout my time with the squash team, most based on different pronunciations of my name. Now the whole team has pretty much settled on Dito, which is short for Brandito. I’m not sure where this came from, but it's funny how it has progressed over time.
DS: What would be your best advice to your 15-year-old self?
BDO: Life is all about balance, manage your time wisely so that you can do all the things you enjoy. You can be a good student, be great at a sport, and enjoy your friends if you know how to manage your time.
