Throughout the summer, DartmouthSports.com will be focusing on members of the Class of 2024 who are currently in their "Sophomore Summers" presented by the Norwich Inn.
This installment focuses on
Peter Lapina of the Dartmouth men's lacrosse team. The Manhasset, New York native started 12 of 13 games for the Big Green this season, finishing with eight goals and 10 assists.
DartmouthSports.com: What have you been doing during your sophomore summer?
Peter Lapina: So far during the summer in Hanover, I have been training a lot with my friends and out strength coach, Coach Harting. We've been lifting and conditioning four times a week for an hour and a half each day. It not only improves our physical fitness but also facilitates further camaraderie within our class which I have definitely valued so far. With lifts in the morning and my classes ending by noon, I have spent much of my free time exploring the Upper Valley with friends. Whether it's the Connecticut River, a new river, or a hike, I have gotten outside to explore the vast amount o outdoor activities New Hampshire has to offer, which has been incredibly rewarding.
DS: What is your favorite place on campus?
PL: My favorite place on campus is easily Scully-Fahey Field. I spend the most time out of anywhere on campus on Scully and in the locker room. It's the place where I have also made a lot of my closest friends so far at school. Also, there's no other place where I have made significant memories. Also, I think Scully embodies what Dartmouth is all about, it is surrounded by trees and the Appalachian Trail runs behind it. I think its intimacy when playing there makes it one of the coolest places to play. It's where I see my parents every time we play it's pretty rough to beat that. I think it plays a significant role in all of my teammates' experiences and I think each of them would have the same answer.
DS: What was it in the recruiting process that sold you on Dartmouth?
PL: Obviously, Dartmouth's standing as an Ivy League school and one of the best academic institutions in the country is one of the reasons I chose Dartmouth in the recruiting process. However, outside of that, one of the big selling points was the community present on campus. I believed Dartmouth's location and small student population facilitated an incredible sense of community which I've found to be true in my time so far. Everyone spends time together and is willing to help each other. Lastly, Coach Callahan's vision for the program made me incredibly excited to join. I believe his and the other coaches' leadership qualities, work ethic, and willingness to help players sold me on Dartmouth. I wanted to be part of a team where I could have an impact on and off the field, as well as continuing to grow a program that has been consistently improving each year.
DS: If you could play another sport at Dartmouth, what would it be and why?
PL: If I could play another sport at Dartmouth, it would probably be football. First, I have made a lot of friends on the football team during my time here, and they are all incredible and hardworking people, similar to the lacrosse team. Through these friends and my own experiences, I have heard Coach Teevens is an incredible coach with a lot of experience. His experience is invaluable and he constantly improves players on and off the field. The same goes for their strength coach, Coach Brown, who is incredibly dedicated and motivating, as I had the opportunity to train with for a few weeks over winter break.
DS: What has been your best on-field memory thus far in your Dartmouth career?
PL: My best on-field memory so far in my Dartmouth career was beating Vermont early in the season. After our opening game loss at home, we subsequently won four straight games with Vermont being the fourth. Also, Vermont beat us in a one-goal game in 2020, right before the season was canceled, and the game meant a lot for those that were on the team that year. Lastly, the game was at home on Scully-Fahey which made it an incredible experience. Even on a Tuesday, there was so much support from across campus.
DS: How is Hanover different or similar to where you grew up?
PL: I grew up in Manhasset, N.Y. on Long Island. Hanover is a little similar to where I grew up in that it is a smaller town with a tight-knit community. However, Long Island doesn't offer the expansive opportunities to enjoy your surroundings quite as the Upper Valley does. Additionally, Hanover's remoteness differentiates itself as I grew up just 30 minutes from the city and on busy Long Island. It was definitely a change of pace getting used to the fewer cars and roads. However, I always look forward to returning to Hanover and to these differences that make Dartmouth so special.
DS: What are your plans for the upcoming off-term?
PL: For my upcoming off-term in the fall, I currently have no definitive plans other than practicing with the team and lifting. However, as a government and economics major I am planning on pursuing research opportunities within the economics department, becoming a TA for a class I have taken such as Econ 1 or getting a local internship. Outside of lacrosse, I plan on pursuing a local opportunity to keep myself busy in something I find interesting.
DS: What would be your best advice to your 15-year-old self?
PL: My best advice to my 15-year-old self would be to just work hard and everything will work out. As a kid, I always stressed school, recruiting and sports. Still to this day, I find myself stressing about things that are out of my control, and worried that my hard work will be for nothing. I have always been hardworking, but one thing I have learned a lot in the last two years at Dartmouth is that if you work hard, you might not get what you want, but everything will work out in the end and it's not worth the worrying and stress.
DS: Who would play you in the movie of your life?
PL: Miles Teller. I have heard I look a little bit like him from a couple of people. Mainly after I asked them if I looked like him. But I think he could pick up a lacrosse stick and do alright. He did look pretty athletic in the last Top Gun movie, and I think he is a pretty cool guy.
