Throughout the summer, DartmouthSports.com will be focusing on members of the Class of 2024 who are currently in their "Sophomore Summers" presented by the Norwich Inn.
This installment focuses on
Julia Mastrio of women's lacrosse. A native of Wilbraham, Massachusetts, Mastrio made 14 starts on defense last season and competed in every game for the Big Green in 2022.
DartmouthSports.com: What have you been doing during your sophomore summer?
Julia Mastrio: This summer I am taking two classes: one about Spanish films and another about the ethics of information technology. I'm really excited for them because philosophy and women and gender/sexuality studies are two fields I haven't been able to explore yet. I'm also keeping up with my off-season fitness through working with our strength and conditioning coach, Schuyler (Harting). When I'm not in class or Floren, I'm working at the library, attending training for my fall internship and participating as a member in the Kappa Delta Epsilon sorority on campus. I've also had the opportunity to participate in the DRIVE program run by DP2, which is a really useful program to strengthen leadership skills while meeting other athletes.
DS: If you could swap places with one teammate, who would it be and why?
JM: I think I'd want to swap places with
Gisele Todd, our 2025 goalie. Since I play defense, it would be similar to what I'm used to, but seeing the whole field is a perspective I want to be able to understand and see from her point of view. Give her major props for standing in front of some crazy powerful shots this past season, especially against some great players from Northwestern and Boston College. Finally, I don't think I've ever met another person that is as flexible as Gisele. I'd do anything to move like she does!
DS: What show do you binge watch?
JM: My favorite show to binge right now is definitely Stranger Things, since they recently released new episodes. I think this season is scarier than the past three, so I've been enjoying it and telling all my friends to watch it too. The different storylines are always entertaining and being able to watch them come together at the end of the season is super interesting to see how they tie together.
DS: What is your favorite place on campus?
JM: My favorite spot on campus this summer has been the Collis porch. With the great weather, it's nice to get some sun while doing work. It's also a very social spot, so I always get to see my friends passing by. The close second is definitely down at the Ledyard Canoe Club by the river. Whether it's swimming or renting a paddle board, it's a perfect place to take a break from work and enjoy the river while it's warm.
DS: If you could play another sport at Dartmouth, what would it be and why?
JM: Since I played field hockey in high school, I'd definitely say field hockey. I had such a blast during the fall seasons in high school and it was a great way to switch it up for me. Also, in high school I played forward, so it would let me get a change from the defensive position I play in lacrosse
DS: If you could go anywhere in the world right now, where would you go and why?
JM: I've always wanted to go to Spain and unfortunately, my D-Plan didn't allow for an abroad program. I'm minoring in Spanish and I've always wanted to experience the culture of Spain, so this would be the coolest experience for me. The different food in Spain would also be an added plus. Hopefully I can visit there someday!
DS: What's the app you use most on your phone?
JM: Especially in the summer, I'm always checking the Weather Channel app to see when the best time to go by the river is. Being so busy between school, training and work, those prime hours of high UV or really hot days are definitely taken advantage of. Also, since it's not a cold winter right now, I always check to see if there's an off chance I'll need a rain jacket.
DS: What was it in the recruiting process that sold you on Dartmouth?
JM: This will defiantly not come as a surprise based on our school, but I really did enjoy the emphasis of academics when I was being recruited by Dartmouth. I knew how important it was for me to not only be an athlete, but a student first, and the coaches here really get it. They encourage us to go to our office hours, never plan anything during classes and are really understanding if we have big assignments to take care of. Our coach is really great at helping us use lacrosse as a time to decompress from school as one of its benefits. They know how fast-paced the quarter system can be and give us the tools to be the best student-athletes we can be.
