Throughout the summer, DartmouthSports.com will be focusing on members of the Class of 2025 who are currently in their "Sophomore Summers" presented by the Norwich Inn.
This installment focuses on
Asialeata Meni of the women's rugby program.
DartmouthSports.com: What have you been doing during your sophomore summer?
Asialeata Meni: My summer has mostly consisted of off-season workouts, research I'm doing with the Anthropology department, and weekend side quests with my friends.
DS: What was it in the recruiting process that sold you on Dartmouth?
AM: What sold me on Dartmouth was the dynamic between the coaching staff and the relationship I built with them during the recruiting process. Their interactions made me laugh, and even though I was unfamiliar with Dartmouth coming in, I trusted them and the team environment they created.
DS: Other than your parents, who has had the greatest influence on your life?
AM: Other than my mom, I'd say my high school rugby coach who happens to be my uncle has had the greatest influence on my life. If it weren't for him, I would not be playing rugby at the level I am today. He started the women's team at my high school for me and ultimately provided me with the platform I needed to get recruited.
DS: What has been your best on-field memory thus far in your Dartmouth career?
AM: My best on-field memory thus far in my two years is a toss-up between winning the 2021 National Championship at Army West Point and this past Ivy 7s Tournament at Dartmouth when we beat Harvard in the championship game. Both were hard-fought games but they're my favorite because my mom was there for both of them.
DS: How is Hanover different or similar to where you grew up?
AM: Hanover is very different from where I grew up in Southern California, Orange County specifically. I experienced intense culture shock during my freshman year, which started during that preseason when one of my teammates didn't know what a tamale was. The differences in weather were also felt when I didn't believe that black ice was a thing and slipped face-first on the sidewalk.
DS: What are your plans for your upcoming off-term?
AM: During my next off term, which is 24X, I plan on playing rugby and furthering my anthropology research. At the bare minimum, after seven consecutive terms, I just want to pursue my other interests unrestrained by a 10-week term.
DS: What would be your best advice to your 15-year-old self?
AM: I'd tell my 15-year-old self to become better friends with her brother, he's actually pretty cool.
DS: If you could go anywhere in the world right now, where would you go and why?
AM: If I could go anywhere in the world right now I'd go home to Southern California. I won't be able to go back till winter break due to preseason and the idea of getting poke bowls and going to the beach with all of my friends sounds nice right now.
