HANOVER, N.H. - Freshman Nafeesa Remtilla (Vancouver, B.C.) scored with under three minutes remaining in the second half to give Dartmouth a 2-1 victory in its season-opening game against Kent State.
Senior Laura Kistler (Toledo, Ohio) also scored for the Big Green, and senior Lauren Balukjian (Greenville, R.I.) made six saves in goal to earn the victory while Linz Markwart made four stops for the Golden Flashes.
Kent State jumped on top 1-0 midway through the first half when Libby Lame corralled a rebound from Britt van Pelt's initial shot and put it past Balukjian. Dartmouth responded eight minutes later when a scramble in front of the goal resulted in a penalty stroke for the Big Green. Kistler knocked it home past Markwart, firing it inside the left post. The Golden Flashes nearly pulled ahead in the closing seconds of the half, but Balukjian stopped Kate Perry's shot with a kick save.
Dartmouth controlled most of the second half, outshooting Kent State 10-4, but could not put the visitors away until Remtilla scored her first collegiate goal. The Flashes had one last chance, earning their only penalty corner of the game with just 2:03 remaining. Balukjian made the save, however, and the Big Green ran out the rest of the clock.
For the game, Dartmouth outshot the Flashes 18-10, and had more penalty corners (5-1). The Big Green returns to action next Saturday at 12 p.m. on the road, opening up Ivy League play at Brown.
