Hanover, N.H. – The Dartmouth women's soccer team posted a tremendous 1-0 victory over #10 Boston University this afternoon. With the win, the Big Green (8-3-1/3-0 Ivy) extends its unbeaten streak to seven games while snapping the Terrier's (11-3-2) seven-game unbeaten streak.
"After getting off to a great 3-0 start in the Ivy League, this was a game for us to make sure we get the recognition we deserve outside the league," said Head Coach Angie Hind. "This win is about proving that we are a quality team, a nationally ranked team."
The victory was Hind's 20th during her two-year career as a head coach.
The Big Green sent an early message to the Terriers, nearly scoring in the first minute of the game after catching Boston's defense off guard. Dartmouth got off a weak shot during a scramble in front of the goal but BU goalkeeper Christina Reuter managed to clear the ball.
The two squads played a back-and-forth battle for much of the first half. The Big Green kept the pressure on the Terriers' defense, holding a clear advantage in possession and outshooting the visitors, 6-4 for the period.
After not scoring in the first, Dartmouth came out of the halftime break on a mission, picking up right where it left off. Coach Hind made a timely substitution, sending freshman Kelsey Quick (Bernardsville, N.J.) in to the right side midfield at 56:21. Less than one minute later, at 57:02, she picked up the assist on Becky Poskin's (Leawood, Kan.) game-winner, sliding a low ball across the field from the right side for the sophomore to hammer home.
The goal ignited a fire in the Big Green, who took the reigns and dominated for the rest of the contest, continuing to attack the goal relentlessly. Dartmouth had a chance to score again in the 63rd minute when Poskin's rebound shot was saved after Emily Tracy (Belfair, Wash.) had her attempt blocked by a BU defender.
"We didn't want to start hanging on and we kept the players in that we knew would maintain positive pressure," noted Hind regarding the consistent offense. "I think it was a matter of pride for our kids to prove that we are a team that would keep going."
Dartmouth continued to play a solid defensive game as well, holding BU without a shot from 59:17 to 76:45, when junior goalkeeper Amanda Webb (Danvers, Mass.) saved an attempt by Marisha Schumacher-Hodge off a free-kick.
That would be the Terriers' last offensive attempt of the day, while the Big Green had several more chances to pad its lead. One goal would prove enough, however, as Dartmouth held on for its seventh consecutive shutout.
The Big Green defense has not allowed a goal since September 15 in a 1-0 loss to Minnesota. with four saves, Webb earned her seventh shutout of the season and 13th of her career, good for third place all-time.
"BU is a great regional rival and it is so exciting to win. I am thrilled for our team," said Webb, who was quick to credit her teammates. "Obviously our defense is not just me. The back line is phenomenal. They don't let many chances through which makes it easy for me."
In addition to their #10 national ranking, the Terriers came into the contest as the top-ranked team in the Northeast. The Big Green is currently third in the Northeast and receiving votes in the NSCAA National Poll.
Dartmouth will be in action again on Sunday when it hosts Penn at 2:30 p.m. in the second game of an Ivy League doubleheader with the men.
