BoxscoreHanover, N.H. – The Dartmouth women's soccer team (9-3-1 / 4-0 Ivy) remained firmly atop the Ivy League standings with a 1-0 victory over Penn (7-4-1 / 1-3 Ivy) today. The Big Green is currently riding an eight-game unbeaten streak and has not allowed a goal during that stretch.
"I am delighted to get this win, but disappointed that we could not score more goals," said Head Coach
Angie Hind.
Dartmouth came out of the gates strong, taking control early in the first half and dominating possession. The Big Green outshot the Quakers 9-2 for the period, including what would prove to be the biggest shot of the day in the 30th minute. Rookie
Myra Sack (Wynnewood, Pa.) brought the ball up out of the midfield, causing Penn goalkeeper Cailly Carroll to challenge her way out of the penalty area. When Carroll misplayed the ball, Dartmouth senior
Emily Tracy (Belfair, Wash.) took advantage of the opening and fired a rocket into the goal from nearly 30 yards out.
The Big Green had another chance to score just three minutes later, but could not capitalize on a scramble in fthe penalty box.
Dartmouth's impressive team defense came through in the clutch in the 44th minute. Junior goalkeeper
Amanda Webb (Danvers, Mass.) punched away a cross but lost the ball behind her. Penn's Natalie Capuano took advantage, tracking down the ball and firing away as Webb was down in the corner. Senior captain
Colleen Kelly (Potomc, Md.) blocked the shot and cleared the ball to preseve the shutout.
The Quakers made some adjustments at halftime to increase their offensive production. They took five shots in the second to the Big Green's seven, but Webb came up big in goal, making four of her six saves in the period.
Dartmouth had several big chances to pad its lead in the second, but just missed the mark.
Webb recorded her eighth shutout of the season and 14th of her career. She and the Big Green defense have not allowed a goal since the Sept. 15 1-0 loss to Minnesota, shutting out eight consecutive opponents. Also, Dartmouth has yet to give up a goal in Ivy play.
Hind was again pleased with her team's defensive performance. "Our back line continues to be unbelieveable, especially Kelly,
Whitney Douthett (Newtown, Pa.) and
Annie Stanley (Winnetka, Ill). They deal with every situation with confidence, grit and determination. They are very proud of our record and couple with Webb's performances, have been first class all season."
The Big Green heads to instate rival UNH for a 3:00 p.m. start on Wednesday afternoon.
