HANOVER, N.H. -- Goaltender Mike Devine (Orchard Park, N.Y.) made 30 saves as the Dartmouth men's hockey team opened the 2006-07 season with a resounding 5-2 victory over Harvard Friday night in Thompson Arena. Five different Big Green players scored goals on the night as David Jones (North Vancouver, B.C.) notched three points as did captain Tanner Glass (Craven, Sask.).
Devine made 15 saves in the third period after the Big Green (1-0 overall, 1-0 ECAC) erupted for four goals in the second stanza.
Harvard's Jimmy Fraser spotted the Crimson a 1-0 lead at the midway point of the first period. Dartmouth's Jones evened it at 1-1 about two minutes later. The junior assistant captain went top shelf over the Crimson netminder after a pass from John Gibson (Okotoks, Alta.) was tipped forward by Glass.
Dartmouth made it 3-1 early in the second. Brandon Harrington (Rochester, Minn.) scored at 3:24, and Nick Johnson (Calgary, Alta.) got what proved to be the gamewinner at 7:20. Harrington's goal came when the sophomore took the initial shot and had it blocked. Dan Shribman (Swampscott, Mass.) cycled around the back of the net passing out to Ryan Bellows (St. Catharines, Ont.) who got the puck on Harrington's stick for the goal. Johnson's strike came off a muffed centering pass. Glass picked up the puck, fired to Jones who shot out front to Johnson.
After Harvard (0-1 overall, 0-1 ECAC) got within one, 3-2, on Ryan Maki's power play goal at 11:12, the Big Green answered on a J.T. Wyman (Wayzata, Minn.) power play marker at 14:07. Glass shot across center ice to a waiting Jones who got the puck to Wyman. The junior then fired a laser into the back of the Crimson net.
Dartmouth picked up an insurance tally at 15:19 of the second, when freshman T.J. Galiardi (Calgary, Ont.) had up his first collegiate goal. Freshman Peter Boldt (Greenwich, Conn.) also had his first point as Jon Grecu (Calgary, Alta.) also assisted.
For Harvard, netminder Justin Tobe stopped 24 shots as the Crimson outshot Dartmouth, 32-29.
The Big Green returns to action on Sunday, hosting Vermont at 7 p.m. in a nationally televised contest that can be CN8 which is part of the Comcast Network. The game can also be viewed live at CN8.com.
