HANOVER, N.H. -- A power play goal by captain Tanner Glass (Craven, Sask.) just 1:35 into the third period boosted the Dartmouth men's hockey team to a 3-2 victory over Vermont in non-conference action Sunday night. The victory improves the Big Green to 2-0 on the season while the Catamounts fall to 2-3-1.
Glass was set up by teammates David Jones (North Vancouver, B.C.) and J.T. Wyman (Wayzata, Minn.), breaking a 2-2 tie with Vermont's Dean Strong in the penalty box.
Strong scored back-to-back goals in the second period, both on the power play, as Vermont recovered from a 2-0 deficit.
Dartmouth got on the board quickly as Ben Lovejoy (Orford, N.H.) netted a power play tally just 58 seconds into the game. Glass got the puck in the circle firing to Lovejoy on the blue line who went five hole on Vermont netminder Joe Fallon.
The Big Green lead went to 2-0 with 13:27 to play in the middle stanza when Kevin Swallow (Stanwood, Mich.) scored the only even-strength goal of the night. The Cats power play was just ending as Connor Shields (Edmonton, Alta.) got the puck on the side of the net passing out to John Gibson (Okotoks, Alta.) who fired on net only to have the puck careem off the boards and come out in front with Swallow there to punch it in.
Vermont outshot Dartmouth, 31-19, but Big Green goaltender Mike Devine (Orchard Park, N.Y.) came up big with 29 saves. The junior helped the Big Green kill several 5-on-3 Vermont power plays. For the Catamounts, Fallen had 16 saves on the night.
The Big Green will continue at home next weekend with two ECAC Hockey League games on tap. On Friday, Nov. 3 St. Lawrence comes into Thompson Arena for a 7:00 p.m. tilt with Clarkson the next night, also at 7:00 p.m.
