HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth men's hockey team dropped its first game of the season, a 2-1 nail-biter, to St. Lawrence as the Saints scored with :26 left in the overtime frame. Big Green freshman T.J. Galiardi (Calgary, Alta.) broke the 0-0 tie early in the third period on his second goal of the season.
In an even game through the first two stanzas, Galiardi was the one to break the dead lock, putting Dartmouth on the board 2:08 into the third stanza. Dan Shribman (Swampscott, Mass.) stole the puck behind the St. Lawrence net passing out to Rob Pritchard (Burnaby, B.C.) who was waiting on the win. Pritchard flipped it to Galiardi who snuck the puck over the line for the goal.
The Saints evened things up at 8:23 off a power play goal by Shawn Fensel from Kevin DeVergilio and Matt Generous. Dartmouth was able to keep SLU off the board for the rest of the period as the Big Green outshot the Saints, 12-11.
Dartmouth controlled the overtime stanza early on, recording two shots on goal and several key faceoff wins but it was St. Lawrence's Charlie Griffin that was the hero for the Saints as he tipped the puck over Big Green netminder Mike Devine's (Orchard Park, N.Y.) head for the winning goal.
In the game SLU outshot Dartmouth 35-23 and was 1-8 on power play chances. Dartmouth went 0-6 on the extra-man as this was the first game for 2006-07 the Big Green has not had a power play goal.
"We tried but St. Lawrence deserved the win," said head coach Bob Gaudet. "It was a great effort by them. Mike Devine played a great game for us."
Devine recorded 33 saves for Dartmouth while Alex Petizian had 22 saves for the Saints.
The Big Green continues at home tomorrow night in a 7:00 pm matchup with Clarkson.
