NEW HAVEN, CONN. – Captain Gillian Apps (Unionville, Ont.) scored her ninth and tenth goals of the season in a thrilling, 4-3, win over Ivy League opponent Yale Friday night.
It was the Bulldogs who got on the board first, just four minutes into the first period, when Maggie Westfal took a pass from Mandi Schwartz and beat Big Green net minder Carli Clemis (Taber, Alta.) to give Yale an early lead.
Senior forward Sheila Zingler etched her name in the scoring column when she gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead just five minutes after Yale's first tally. Assists on Zingler's mark were given to Kristin Savard and Helen Resor.
In the fading seconds of the first stanza, the Big Green finally got on the board. Senior Katie Weatherston (Thunder Bay, Ont.) gave a pass to Apps, who buried a shot past the Bulldogs goalie Shivon Zilis to head into the first intermission down just one goal. Apps' goal came on the second power-play opportunity for the Big Green.
After three Yale penalties in three minutes, the Big Green found themselves with a 5x3 man advantage. It was Apps again who lit the lamp for her squad to tie the game at two apiece. Line mates Cherie Piper (Scarborough, Ont.) and Sarah Parsons (Dover, Mass.) were credited with the assists on Apps' second goal of the game.
The Bulldogs re-took the lead at 12:46 of the second period, when Resor scored her second goal of the season that put Yale back on top, 3-2.
Both teams had crucial extra-skater advantages late in the period, but couldn't produce a goal, leaving the score 3-2 heading into the final period.
The Big Green tied the game just 15 seconds into the third period, when sophomore Katie Gray (Calgary, Alta.) scored her first collegiate goal that got the Dartmouth bench fired up.
After 10 minutes of back-and-forth play by both teams, it was Piper who broke the tie for the Big Green at 10:57 of the third period, and putting all the remaining pressure on the Bulldogs.
Desperation set in for the Yale squad late in regulation, forcing the Bulldogs to pull Zilis at 18:33 for the extra skater. The Bulldogs relentless pressure was no match for the Big Green, who shut down its Ivy League opponent to take the victory.
Apps' two goals on the night brings her total to 10, in seven games of play. Zilis ended the night making 23 saves for the Bulldogs, who fall to 4-4-0 overall and 3-3-0 in league play. Clemis earned her fifth win of the season, stopping 14 Bulldog chances, and bringing the Big Green to a 6-1-0 record in the ECAC.
Dartmouth will be in action again tomorrow afternoon as they take on Brown in another Ivy League and ECAC match-up. The puck will drop in Providence, R.I., at 4:00 p.m.
