HANOVER, N.H. - Christopher "Topher" Bordeau, men's freshman lightweight coach at Dartmouth for the past season, has been named the men's varsity heavyweight head coach at Dartmouth, according to an announcement made today by Director of Athletics Josie Harper.
"Topher's successful experience at the highest levels of collegiate rowing, along with his strong leadership skills and firm commitment to the Ivy League model of athletics, made him the ideal choice for this position," said Harper.
Bordeau spent the 2005 season coaching the freshman heavyweight crew at Navy. He guided the Midshipmen to their best finish at the Eastern Sprints in six years.
Before that, he worked from September of 2001 until December of 2004 as the freshman lightweight coach at Princeton. He helped the Tigers to capture two silver medals and one bronze at the Sprints.
A 1998 graduate of Princeton, Bordeau received his bachelor's degree in English with a certificate in American Studies. He won first place in the prestigious Elmer Adler Undergraduate Essay Contest in 1996. On the water, he enjoyed tremendous success. His crews won the national collegiate championship in 1995, 1996 and 1998, when he served as team captain. The Tigers also won the Eastern Sprints in 1996, 1997 and 1998.
Following his graduation from Princeton, he spent a year rowing at Oxford University and received a postgraduate diploma in social administration in 1999 from Hertford College at Oxford.
An outstanding athlete, Bordeau has finished the Ironman Triathlon three times (2000, 2001, 2003).
Bordeau takes over for Buzz Congram, who was the interim coach in 2005-06.
