John and Carla Manley Intercollegiate Fitness and Training Center
The John and Carla Manley Intercollegiate Fitness and Training Center opened officially in December of 1997. It is designed to give varsity athletes at Dartmouth the best opportunity to develop the proper conditioning required by their particular sport.
The Manley Fitness Center features 3,000 square feet of space with state-of-the-art equipment and was made possible through the generosity of Dartmouth alum John M. Manley '40 and his wife Carla. The facility is situated in Alumni Gymnasium.
Opening the new facility relieved overcrowding in the Berry Center's Kresge Fitness Center, which is used by other undergraduates as well as Dartmouth community members.
In the Manley Fitness Center, Dartmouth's student-athletes undergo rigorous but effective strength, power, plyometric, agility, flexibility and conditioning programs.
The strength and conditioning staff is dedicated to creating a physical and mental advantage for Dartmouth's student-athletes through hard work, discipline and sacrifice. Under the direct supervision of the strength and conditioning staff, student-athletes are trained according to the demands of each sport.
Scully-Fahey Field
The 86,400-square foot Scully-Fahey Field, situated within the Chase Field complex near Rupert Thompson Arena, cost $4.4 million. The project includes spectator seating for 1,600 fans, lighting for night contests, fencing, a press box and a scoreboard, as well as an endowment to operate and maintain the facility and replace the turf every 10 years.
The field is named after the two alumni who, along with the support of their wives and families, have pledged the funds to construct and maintain the field -- Donald Scully '49 and Peter Fahey '68.
Scully was a member of Dartmouth's lacrosse and soccer teams as an undergraduate. He played for legendary coach Tom Dent, who is honored -- at the request of the Scully family -- with a special plaque at the new facility. Scully was a midfielder and two-time All-America on the Big Green lacrosse teams that rolled up a 31-7 record from 1947-49, captaining the squad in 1949. He scored 107 goals, a career record that stood for 30 years. He still holds the Dartmouth career mark with 20 three-goal games. In 1948, Scully shared scoring honors on the Dartmouth soccer team.
Fahey, who is also a 1970 graduate of the Thayer School of Engineering, was a member of the varsity basketball and track teams. Currently a member of the College's board of trustees, Fahey is the father of three Dartmouth graduates: daughter Kimberly '92 and sons Peter '94 and Michael '97. Both sons played lacrosse for the Big Green. Peter Fahey Jr. scored 96 points in his varsity career, and captained the 1994 team which finished the season with a 10-4 record -- the Big Green's best mark since Scully's 1948 squad. Michael Fahey was a four-year letterwinner as a defenseman.
