In 2006, Dartmouth broke ground on a new varsity soccer facility for its nationally competitive men's and women's soccer teams. A $4.5 million gift from Stanley Smoyer '34 ensured that the field would be named in honor of Alden “Whitey” Burnham, a coach and administrator at Dartmouth from 1960-1989 who led the Big Green to its first Ivy League soccer championship in 1964. Smoyer's sons were soccer standouts on Burnham's teams in the 1960s. The facility features a top-quality natural-grass pitch, permanent seating for 1,600 spectators, a press box, field lighting, scoreboard, and fencing. Adjacent to Burnham Field is a sports pavilion that will soon be expanded to include dedicated locker rooms for men's and women's soccer, men's and women's lacrosse, and softball, as well as a state-of-the-art training room, team meeting room, equipment room, and spectator rest rooms.
