HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth field hockey team knocked off Penn, 2-1, to record its first Ivy League win of the season, and second overall, today at Scully-Fahey Field.
After a defensive 30 minutes of play captain Whitney Waugh (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) rifled a shot off a penalty corner beating Penn goalie Liz Schlossberg, and giving the Big Green a 1-0 lead.
Just 30 seconds later Dartmouth struck again as Stef Miller (South Plainfield, N.J.) recorded her first goal of the season, as she unleashed a shot from just inside the half circle that found the back of the net. Miller's goal gave the Big Green a 2-0 lead going into the break.
The Quakers Tracy Slatter ruined the shutout for the Big Green in the 56th minute when she blasted a shot through traffic passed Dartmouth net minder Ashley Heist (Bryn Mawr, Pa.).
With just seconds remaining on the clock Penn was issued a penalty corner, but the Dartmouth defense, led by a kick save from Heist, held strong to record the victory. Heist ended the match making two saves, while Schlossberg recorded five for the Quakers.
With the win the Big Green improve to 2-5 overall, and a 1-2 Ivy League record, while the Quakers fall to 3-7.
The Big Green will travel to New Hampshire tomorrow to take on the Wildcats in a non-league contest. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
