Big Green Skiers Win UNH Carnival
BARTLETT, N.H. --The Dartmouth College ski team extended its 37 point lead after Day One to win the UNH Winter Carnival by an impressive 83 points Saturday.
With wins in six of the eight races contested, the Big Green won the second carnival of the Eastern Intercollegiate Skiing Association (EISA) carnival circuit. Dartmouth took first place with 784 points, Vermont was second with 701 points and Middlebury College was third among the 13 schools with 668.
At the Jackson Cross Country Center, the Big Green cross country teams took first place honors in both the men's and women's events. Senior captain Mike Sinnot (Sun Valley, Idaho) won the 20-kilometer classic by almost 15 seconds with a time of 29:37.2. Junior
Ben True (North Yarmouth, Maine) placed second with a time of 29:51.7, and junior Benjamin Koons (Sidney, Maine) finished fifth in 30:33.0. Rounding out the top 10 were sophomore
Glenn Randall (Collbran, Colo.) and freshmen Patrick O'Brien (Putney, Vt.) placed ninth and tenth, respectively.
In the women's 15-kilometer classic, junior Elsa Sargent (Orleans, Vt.) won the race over Carina Hamel from UVM by 22 seconds with a time of 35:07.6. Scoring points for the Big Green were junior
Susan Dunklee (Barton, Vt.) and sophomore Hannah Dreissigacker (Morrisville, Vt.), fourth and fifth with times of 36:09.9 and 36:12.1, respectively.
At the Attitash Ski Area, the men's alpine team placed first and the women's team placed second in the slalom. The 2005 NCAA men's slalom champion, David Chodounsky (Crested Butte, Colo.), won with a combined time of 1:36.37. Following closely in second place was senior Evan Weiss (Kenmore, Wash.) with 1:37.64.
In the women's slalom, runner-up honors went to junior Michelanne Shields (Colorado Springs, Colo.) with a combined time of 1:54.12. Freshman Hayley Jones (Whitehouse, N.J.) had two solid runs to place fifth with a time of 1:54.44 and senior Lindsay Mann (Bedford, Mass.) placed seventh with 1:54.77.
The Big Green will next see action February 2-3 at the University of Vermont Winter Carnival in Stowe, Vermont. The Dartmouth Winter Carnival is February 9-10.
