HANOVER, N.H. - Dartmouth men's lacrosse enters a critical Ivy League battle on Saturday, when the nation's number one team, Cornell, comes to Scully-Fahey Field. Game time is 1 p.m.
The Big Green has a 4-4 overall record, 1-1 Ivy League, and held a three-game win streak going into last Friday's game at Penn. The Quakers temporarily derailed Dartmouth, scoring two goals in the last two minutes for an 8-7 win.
Meanwhile, Cornell survived a scare at No. 18 Syracuse Tuesday night, when sophomore Max Seibald scored with four seconds remaining for a 16-15 victory. That pushed the Big Red's record to 9-0 overall. In the Ivy League, Cornell is 3-0 and continues to hold down the top spot in both polls - the Nike/Inside Lacrosse Men's Division I media and the US Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) coaches.
"It's exciting just to play an Ivy League contest," said Dartmouth coach Bill Wilson, "but to have the No. 1 team coming into our field and to play in front of our fans is special. It's a great opportunity to get a top-five win."
Of late, Cornell has had the upper hand in the series, winning nine in a row. Dartmouth's last victory came in Hanover on April 12, 1997, by a 12-8 count.
After Saturday, the Big Green faces a five-game road trip. After an April 18 game at Yale, Dartmouth travels to No. 3 Virginia (April 21), No. 2 Albany (April 24) and No. 5/6 Princeton (April 28). The stretch ends with a May 1 contest at unranked Holy Cross.
Big Green senior Nick Bonacci (Crofton, Md.) continues to pace the offense with a team-high 28 points (15 goals and 13 assists). With 141 career points, Bonacci is 10th in that category.
Freshman Ari Sussman (New Haven, Conn.) - twice the Ivy League's rookie of the week - has a team-high 18 goals and 10 assists for 28 points. Sophomore Brian Koch (Rye, N.Y.) is next with 16 goals and seven assists for 23 points.
