Sunday River, ME ? Dartmouth's alpine ski team bounced back from a
disappointing slalom Saturday with a strong showing in Sunday's giant
slalom to lock up the win at the Bates Winter Carnival, the first
event of the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA) carnival
circuit.
Freshman Courtney Hammond paced three Big Green finishers in the top
10, winning her first collegiate race in 2:04.51, more than a half a
second ahead of Vermont's Jilyne McDonald and Kara Crow. Senior

Michelanne Shields placed fifth, with sophomore
Hayley Jones not far behind in seventh. Freshmen Kelsey Roddick followed a solid
day of slalom with a confident 13th place finish in the giant slalom.
The Big Green men also placed three finishers in the top ten in
Sunday's giant slalom. Middlebury's Alec Tarberry won the race in
1:59.83 with Williams' Charles Christianson in second, and Dartmouth
senior captain Dave Chodounski, who won Saturday's slalom, in third.

Leading Middlebury by a single point after Saturday's races,
Dartmouth emerged from the weekend with its first carnival win of the
2008 season with 666 points. Middlebury finished second with 640,
andVermont was third with 578 points.
St. Lawrence University will host the next EISA Carnival race next
weekend, Jan. 18-19. The Alpine races will be held at Whiteface
Mountain, NY while the Nordic races will be held at Mt. Van
Hoevenburg, NY.
