Lake Placid, NY ? The Big Green of Dartmouth will return home victorious after another great weekend of racing at the St. Lawrence EISA Carnival and their ninth-straight win.
The Dartmouth women's cross country team, proving themselves as the leading power on this year's women's circuit, swept the podium in the
15-kilometer classical race held at Mt. Von Hovenburg Saturday.
Freshman Ida Sargent won her second race in three weeks with a time of 40:34.4. Senior captain Elsa Sargent was close behind her younger
sister in second, and freshmen Rosie Brennan in third. The rest of the Big Green demonstrated the incredible depth of this team with all
of them finishing within the top twelve racers. Senior Susan Dunklee placed sixth, junior Hannah Dreissigacker placed ninth, junior Audrey Weber placed tenth and sophomore Katie Bono placed eleventh.
Juergen Uhl from the University of Vermont won the men's 20-kilometer classical race with a time of 52:32.0. The Big Green, meanwhile,
backed up the women's performance with junior Dakota Blackhorse-Von Jess's second place finish and junior Glenn Randall's third place
finish. Dartmouth sophomore Patrick O'Brien, in close pursuit of his teammates, finished in fourth and sophomore Pavel Sotskov finished in
seventh.
At Whiteface Mountain on Saturday, Middlebury's Andrew Wagner won the men's slalom race with a time of 1:23.96, with Vermont's Greg Hardy
in second, and Vincent Lebrun-Fortin from Colby in third. While some of Dartmouth's top skiers ? including the East's top-ranked men's slalom skier Dave Chodounsky ? did not finish the race, junior Scott Linton stepped up to lead the team with a strong sixth place finish, with freshmen Ace Tarberry just behind him in eighth and senior Jake Dudek in 19th.
The slalom race also proved difficult for members of the Dartmouth women's Alpine team, with freshman Courtney Hammond skiing out in the
second run and freshmen Kelsey Roddick hiking in her second run. Lyndee Janowiak from the University of Vermont won the race with a
time of 1:28.35. New Hampshire's Veronique Archambault-Leger placed second and Vermont's Kara was third. Sophomore Hayley Jones lead the
Dartmouth team with her tenth place finish with senior captain Michelanne Shields placing 12th and senior Hannah Tsai placing 20th.
Even with a challenging day of slalom, Dartmouth won the St. Lawrence Carnival with 587 points, 32 points ahead of second place finisher Middlebury's 555 points, and 60 points ahead of third place finisher University of Vermont's 527 points. This weekend's victory marks Dartmouth's ninth consecutive team win, including the 2007 carnival season and the NCAA championships. The University of Vermont will host the third Carnival race of the season on Feb. 1-2 and will be looking to upset Dartmouth's current two-win streak in the 2008 season.
