PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Dartmouth volleyball team snapped a four-game losing streak with a 3-1 victory over Brown on Saturday afternoon. The win is the Big Green's first league win of the season and it puts Dartmouth's record at 5-9, 1-3 Ivy. The Bears fall to 9-7, 1-3. A trio of freshmen led the BIg Green to the victory.
Madeline Baird (Austin, Texas) was tops with 16 kills and a .245 hitting percentage as Amber Bryant (Libertyville, Ill.) and Kendall Houston (Austin, Texas) each had over 20 digs with 27 and 20, respectively. Houston was the key setter for the Big Green with 40.
"I knew we had a chance because of how we played last night," said head coach Ann Marie Lares. " We finally got there. I'm happy and really proud. We controlled the match today and we learned how to win. This was a total team effort and the blocking part of our team is really coming together."
Brown started the first set with a 10-5 lead before Dartmouth began to creep back, tying the contest at 14. It was all the BIg Green after that Megan MacGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.) served or helped her team to six points before Kelsey Johnson (Carlsbad, Calif.) was key late in the contest as Dartmouth took a 25-16 win.
In the second set it was more point-for-point as the two sides traded the lead several times before Johnson helped her squad to a 17-11 lead. Brown was alble to come back and close the gap but Dartmouth held on for the 25-22 win.
The Bears took the third set as Brown took an early lead. The Big Green tied things up at 15 and pulled ahead but the Bears came right back. The two traded the lead three times before Brown was able to eek out a 25-22 win.
Johnson and Baird were key for Dartmouth early in the final set as the two helped the Big Green take a 13-4 lead. Brown was able to pull within four but Dartmouth held on for the 25-19 win.
Johnson finished 12 kills and four assisted blocks while MacGregor notched 11. Morgan Covington (Katy, Texas) continued her comeback with five total blocks and seven kills.
Dartmouth will be home next weekend with two key Ivy League matchups against Columbia and Cornell. The Lions visit Leede Arena for a Friday night 5:00 pm matchup as Cornell is in town on Homecoming for a 4:00 pm tilt.
