FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. ? Sophomore Ashley Mitchell (Charleston, S.C.) was edged in her main draw semifinal match Sunday at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center College Invitational in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., while fellow sophomore Molly Scott (Trabuco Cyn, Calif.) won her second consolation match of the weekend.
Playing on the fabled grandstand court, Mitchell lost to Brown's Emily Ellis 6-4, 7-5 in the No. 7 flight, while Scott persevered in a hard-hitting battle with Purdue's top player, South African Michelle Sammons, 4-6, 7-6, 10-8, to go 2-1 in the No. 1 flight.
In other consolation singles action, sophomore Ryan Reichel (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) fell 6-2, 7-5 to Cornell's Liz Googe, who alternated between the No. 1 and 2 spots for the Big Red the last two years.
