HANOVER, N.H. ? A team effort gave the Dartmouth (7-5-1, 1-3-0) women's soccer team a 2-0 victory over Penn (7-4-2, 2-1-1) on Saturday afternoon. The victory is the Big Green's first league victory of the season. Penn entered the match unbeaten in the Ivy League, at 2-0-1.
In an evenly played match that saw both teams have chances, Dartmouth
made good on two of theirs while Penn was unable to dent the Big Green
goal thanks to a stellar effort by senior goalkeeper Laurel Peak (Redding, Conn.) and the backline.
Becky Poskin (Leawood, Kansas) got Dartmouth on the board in the 25th minute, converting a defensive turnover into a 20-yard effort.
The Big Green sealed the win on the hour, when Peyton Tata (Virginia Beach, Va.) hooked a shot over Penn keeper Cailly Carroll. Whitney Odden was credited with an assist on the play.
Penn had a few chances early as Emily Forline (Bethesda, Md.) had a defensive clear at the 27th minute and then Peak was able to punch out a free kick by Penn's Sarah Friedman from 20 yards out.
Poskin tried to get another one at the 35th minute as the ball came across, she fired and seemed to have the angle on Quaker goalie Sara Rose. The ball looked like it might go in but remained just outside the box, Kelsey Quick (Bernardsville, N.J.) came in on the slide with a look at the open goal but her shot somehow went high.
Consecutive Penn possessions at the 75th minute pressured Peak but she was able to punch out a corner kick and then meet Kirstin Kaiser on a breakaway, and make a point blank save.
In the 84th minute Myra Sack (Wynnewood, Pa.) went on a one-on-one break with Carroll. Sack fired as Carroll was out of position but Carroll managed to get a hand on the ball preventing the score.
The Quakers outshot the Big Green, 11-9, but could not get either goal back in being shut out for just the second time this season.
Carroll shared duties with Rose, who started the match and played the first half. Both women had two saves and allowed one goal. Peak earned her seventh victory and recorded her fourth shutout of the season with seven saves.
Dartmouth returns to action on Saturday, playing an Ivy League match against Columbia. Game time is set for 7:00 pm in New York City.
