NEW YORK ? Two early goals proved the difference tonight as Columbia took a 3-1 victory over the Dartmouth women's soccer team.
The three goals were the most given up by Dartmouth in a single game this season and it marked just the second time the Green has lost by more than a one goal margin. It was just Columbia's fourth win in the all-time series, which Dartmouth leads 17-4-2.
The Lions came out blazing, scoring two goals in the first eight minutes for a 2-0 lead that would eventually prove insurmountable for the Big Green. Dartmouth drops to 7-6-1, 1-4 Ivy while Columbia improves to 10-3-2, 3-1-1.
Columbia struck first in just the fifth minute of play when Liz Wicks sent a cross in for junior Sophie Reiser, who headed the ball past Dartmouth keeper Laurel Peak (Redding, Conn.) to the right side. Just minutes later, at 7:45, it was Reiser again from 10 yards out, this time off a feed from Ashlin Yahr.
Dartmouth mounted its counterattack and threatened the Columbia goal throughout the half, forcing Lions keeper Rebecca Taylor to make five saves. Senior Becky Poskin (Leawood, Kan.) was responsible for three shots on goal while junior Maggie Goldstein (Hillsborough, Calif.) had two.
The Big Green managed to get on the board before the break when Columbia scored an own goal after a Dartmouth corner kick at 41:34.
The teams traded shots on goal to start the second half, but Columbia extended its lead to 3-1 in the 51st minute. Reiser fired a shot that Peak saved, but she was relentless in her pursuit of the rebound, beating Peak on the second try to score her 12th goal of the season.
Dartmouth kept fighting throughout the second half, but could not break through. Columbia continued its assault to the very end too, forcing Peak to stop six shots, including three from Reiser, in the final 20 minutes of the game.
Rookie Aly O'Dea (Irvine, Calif.) provided a spark off the bench in the second and led the Dartmouth attack with four shots, while Poskin and Goldstein each finished with three attempts, all on goal.
Both Peak and Taylor made eight saves in goal. Taylor's play was a big part of Dartmouth's inability to get on the board, despite a slight 15-14 shot advantage.
Dartmouth will return home to regroup before hosting Harvard this Saturday, Nov. 1 at 4:30 p.m. at Burnham Field on Senior Day.
