CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Dartmouth women's swimming and diving squad opened the season on a high note, splitting its meets with Cornell and Harvard this afternoon.
The Big Green topped Cornell, 181-119, but fell to Harvard, 181-114.
Several swimmers had big days for Dartmouth, led by sophomore Maddie Steiner (Dallas, Texas), who took first in the 200 freestyle in 1:53.86 and second in both the 100 freestyle (53.42) and 500 freestyle (5:11.44).
Senior Heather Jankins (Raynham, Mass.) was impressive as well, with two second place finishes and a third place finish on the day. Jankis was second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.56 and 50 freestyle in 24.86. She also took third in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:28.42.
One of the highlights of the day for the Big Green was a tremendous showing in the 100 butterfly, in which Dartmouth took second through fourth place. Rookie Caitlin Nicholson (Ithaca, N.Y.) was less than a second off first-place, finishing in 58.65. Kelsey Pinson (Portland, Ore.) was third in 59.31 while Selden took fourth in 59.85, just under the minute-mark.
Sophomore Virginia Selden (Birmingham, Ala.) took second in the 200 butterfly in 2:08.59 while classmate Anna Sonstegard (Sioux Falls, S.D.) finished fourth in the 1000 freestyle in a time of 10:49.46. Dartmouth's top diver was Erica Serpico (Moorestown, N.J.) who brought home second place in the 1-Meter dive in her first collegiate meet with 235.10 points.
Dartmouth is back in action tomorrow when it takes on Colgate in Hamilton, N.Y.
