HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth field hockey team closed out its home regular-season schedule this afternoon as the Big Green fell to the second-ranked Demon Deacons of Wake Forest, 5-1, in non-conference action at Chase Field.
For Wake Forest (17-2) Hilary Moore tallied two goals, while Michelle Kasold added a goal and assist to lead the Demon Deacon attack. Wake Forest had a huge advantage in shots, posting 33 with 23 coming on net. Crystal Duffield earned the win, her 16th of the season, making six saves.
For Dartmouth (6-10), junior Chelsea Dodds (Hanover, N.H.) recorded her second goal in as many games as she scored on another penalty stroke. She scored the only goal in yesterday's 1-0 win over Harvard, which came on a penalty stroke. Freshman Meagan Vakiener (Port Murray, N.J.) was solid for much of the game, making a season-high 17 saves, including 12 in the first half. Senior Jordan Sedlacek (Golden, Colo.) came on with five minutes remaining and posted an amazing save in the final minutes.
The Demon Deacons got things started with 18:18 left in the first half as Kasold gave them a 1-0 lead. She and Kim Romansky broke into the open and played a little give-and-go with Kasold ended up in front, beating Vakiener for the early lead.
Eight minutes later, Moore tallied her first of the afternoon to increased the lead to 2-0. Minou Gimbrere wound up on a penalty corner and found Moore at the far post and she made a nice tip in for the score.
Wake Forest added one more, six minutes before halftime as Liz Fries fired a shot past Vakiener on a penalty corner to push the lead to 3-0. The Demon Deacons controlled most their action in the offensive end, earning 13 penalty corners to only four for the Big Green.
Moore recorded her second of the afternoon, seven minutes into the second half. Once again it was a tip in at the far post that gave Wake Forest a commanding 4-0 lead. Romansky was in the center of the circle and spun around and found Moore at the post and she hit the open net. Romansky was credited with her second assist of the game.
The Demon Deacons added on final goal on a long shot from Melissa Martin, which was redirected by Faith Adams and past a surprised Vakiener for the 5-0 lead.
Dartmouth got on the board with just over 8:14 remaining in the contest as Dodds once again found a way to beat Duffield on the penalty stroke make it a 5-1 game.
The Big Green will be back in action this coming Sunday, Nov. 9, as Dartmouth travels to Cornell to face the Big Red in its final Ivy League game of the season, beginning at 12 p.m.
