Women's Tennis Edged Out By Bulldogs

HANOVER, N.H. - In an epic battle that saw the Big Green just one point away from upending the undefeated Yale Bulldogs, Dartmouth ultimately fell 4-3 at home this afternoon at the Topliff Courts. Dartmouth's record now stands at 15-4 (3-3 Ivy), while Yale wins its first Ivy League title since 1989 with a perfect 7-0 Ivy record (11-8 regular season).

Dartmouth came out strong, taking the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. Senior tri-captain Megan Zebroski (Port Washington, N.Y.) and freshman Molly Scott (Trabuco Cyn, Calif.) battled back from a 7-6 deficit and saved several match points to beat the country's No. 60 team of Janet Kim and Jessie Rhee 9-7, and senior tri-captain Maggie Suydam (Marblehead, Mass.) and freshman Georgiana Smyser (Houston, Texas) won 8-5 at No. 3 doubles. Sophomores Mary Beth Winingham (Carmel, Ind.) and Jesse Adler (Winnetka, Ill.) were edged 9-8 (3) in an exciting match at No. 2 doubles by freshmen Lindsay Clarke and Lauren Ritz.

In singles, Dartmouth got straight-set victories from Adler and Smyser at No. 4 and No. 5 respectively. Adler bested sophomore Sarah Lederhandler 6-3, 7-5, while Smyser won 7-6, 6-3 over fellow freshman Stevi Petrelli, whose only previous Ivy loss had come against Penn. At No. 1 singles, Scott fell in straight sets to junior Kim, whose only Ivy loss was to Brown's Bianca Aboubakare. At No. 2 singles Zebroski was edged by sophomore Rhee 7-6, 7-5. Winingham dropped a heartbreaker at No. 3 singles to freshman Clarke 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (6), and freshman Ryan Reichel (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) lost in straight sets to Ritz, who is undefeated in the Ivies at No. 6.

Dartmouth returns to action against Harvard on Wednesday, April 23, at 3 p.m. to play its final match of the season at home.
