HANOVER, N.H. - The No. 61 Dartmouth women's tennis team won its second straight match of the Ivy League season with a 7-0 victory over Cornell at the Alexis Boss Tennis Center and Gordon Pavilion this afternoon. The Big Green's record now improves to 14-1 overall, and 2-0 in the Ivy League.
The 12 noon start was delayed by 30 minutes when the Cornell bus got lost en route to Dartmouth and became stuck in the mud in Etna, N.H., 5 miles from campus. Dartmouth assistant coach
Brian Kuscher led a convoy of Dartmouth parents to pick up Cornell's stranded players and deliver them to the Boss Tennis Center for a delayed 12:30 match start.
As they did yesterday against Columbia, Dartmouth swept the doubles in convincing fashion. Senior tri-captain
Maggie Suydam (Marblehead, Mass.) and freshman
Georgiana Smyser (Houston, Texas) cruised to an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles, followed by senior tri-captain
Megan Zebroski (Port Washington, N.Y.) and
Molly Scott (Trabuco Cyn, Calif.), who won 8-3 at No. 1. Sophomores
Mary Beth Winingham (Carmel, Ind.) and
Jesse Adler (Winnetka, Ill.) completed the doubles sweep for the Big Green with an 8-4 victory at No. 2.
In singles, Dartmouth did not drop a single set to the Big Red. Scott was first off the court for the Big Green after a dominating 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 1 over freshman Sinziana Chis. Adler put the second point on the board for Dartmouth with a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 4 after roaring back from a 4-0 first set deficit, and Zebroski clinched the match for the Big Green with an impressive 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 over Cornell's former No. 1 player, Elizabeth Googe.
Winingham prevailed in a baseline battle over Tammy John at No. 3 singles, winning 7-5, 6-2. Smyser and
Ryan Reichel (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) completed the sweep for Dartmouth after both being pushed to tiebreakers at No. 5 and 6 singles respectively. Smyser prevailed 10-8 in her tiebreaker to win 7-6, 6-2, and Reichel won her tiebreaker 7-5 to win 7-5, 7-6.
Dartmouth hits the road next weekend for matches at Princeton on Friday, April 11, at 2 p.m., and at Penn on Saturday, April 12, at 12 noon.
