? After a scoreless first half, Providence
tallied three second-half goals to defeat the Big Green, 3-0, in non-conference
action on Sunday afternoon from Chase Field.
Providence
(5-2) had three different goal scorers, including Ashley Hudson who scored her eighth
goal of the season to tie her with Julie Ruggieri for the team lead. Also
contributing for the Friars was Jessica
Lane as she had two assists in the win.
In the first half, Providence
had a couple of opportunities, but freshman goalkeeper Meagan Vakiener (Port
Murray, N.J.) came up with the saves. The Friars first chance was a shot from
the top of the circle and Vakiener made a nice blocker stop.
Providence
outshot the Big Green in the opening half 6-0 and posted a 5-1 advantage in
penalty corners.
The Friars took the 1-0 lead 3:21 into the second half as Hudson fired a shot from
the top of the circle that got by Vakiener and tucked just inside the far post.
Jaime Lipski gave Providence
the comfortable 2-0 cushion just a few minutes later. She received a pass from
Lane and took a shot that deflected off a Dartmouth
defender and into the net.
Dartmouth
(0-3) had a few chances in the second half. The Big Green setup a nice penalty
corner when senior Ashley Hines (Newburyport, Mass.) found sophomore Katie Nice (Hanover, N.H.) at the
near post, but Providence goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain slid over and denied
Nice to keep it a two-goal deficit.
Providence
added the third and final goal just under five minutes remaining as Adrienne
Marois beat Vakiener from the center of the circle after being set up by Lane.
Vakiener finished the afternoon with six saves, while
Chamberlain earned the shutout with two stops. Providence held the shots on goal advantage
at 9-2 and the overall shots at 17-3. The Friars also had 10 penalty corners to
Dartmouth's
four.
Dartmouth will open the 2008
Ivy League schedule this coming Saturday as the Big Green heads to Princeton to face the Tigers for a 12 p.m. start.
