Dartmouth Women's Tennis Wraps Up First Day of Maryland Invitational

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Dartmouth women's tennis team went 10-4 on the opening day of the University of Maryland Invitational on Friday.

Sophomores Ryan Reichel and Ashley Mitchell were 2-0 in the C singles flight, and freshman Shelley Carpeni was 2-0 in the B singles flight, winning an exciting 10-8 third set superbreaker against her opponent from UNC-Wilmington. Freshman Carissa King won her lone singles match in the C flight and combined with Carpeni to score a clutch 9-8 win in A flight doubles over a tandem from Florida's Nova Southeast University. Junior Mary Beth Winingham and sophomore Georgiana Smyser went 1-1 in singles and fell in their flight A doubles match. After dropping a three-set nailbiter to UNC-Wilmington, Smyser bounced back to win a 13-11 third set tiebreaker against Perozkova from Nova Southeast. Winingham was edged by Maryland's Krutiyenko, but rebounded to defeat her opponent from James Madison.

Play resumes Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Tennis Center in College Park.
