MALIBU, Calif. - Big Green sophomore Molly Scott was edged in the first round of pre-qualifying at the 2008 Riviera/ITA Women's All American Championships at Pepperdine on Saturday afternoon by the tournament's fourth-seed, Tinesta Rowe of Fresno State, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.
The tournament is one of college tennis' three major national championships and Scott, who had wins over several nationally ranked players last year, was among 64 players from across the country who were selected to play in the pre-qualifier.
Scott broke the 5'10" senior's serve twice in the first set to take a 6-4 advantage. But Rowe, a returning All-American who was a finalist in the 2008 NCAA Doubles Championship, took control of the second set and won it 6-1. In the third set Scott went toe-to-toe with the Jamaican native, who has a pre-season national ranking of No. 86 in singles and No. 1 in doubles, but ultimately fell 6-4 in the third.
"This was a great opportunity for Molly to test her mettle against the country's best players," said Dartmouth head coach Bob Dallis. "I think she clearly demonstrated that she can play at this level since she pushed the NCAA doubles finalist to the brink."
The Dartmouth women's tennis team returns to action on October 10 when they travel to Flushing Meadows, N.Y., for the USTA Billie Jean King Tennis Center College Invitational. Scott was a finalist in the 2007 tournament, knocking off top-seed Elze Potgieter of Texas A&M in the semifinal.
