NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Dartmouth (7-6, 3-0) women's volleyball team didn't have an easy time of it on Friday against Columbia (10-6, 1-2) but the Big Green held on for the hard-fought 3-2 victory. Game scores were 25-21, 27-25, 27-29, 19-25 and 15-10.
The Big Green started out by winning the first two sets but Columbia roared back and won the next two. The fifth and deciding set was back before Dartmouth took over midway through and held on for its third Ivy victory of the season.
"A true battle all five games," said head coach Ann Marie Larese. "I was really proud of this team. We were having a tough night passing and it made everything a little more difficult. Our attacking was pretty balanced and once we got the ball in a zone where we could set it, we took care of it. We had a few players come off the bench and play really well, providing that spark for us."
Leading the way for both teams was Big Green sophomore Madeline Baird (Austin, Texas) who notched a double-double with a season-high 23 kills and a career-high 27 digs. She also hit .340 for the match with one service ace. Senior Megan MacGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.) also helped in the effor with her own double-double, 20 kills and 14 digs.
Dartmouth was also helped along with nine service aces and 16 total digs. Kendall Houston (Austin, Texas) was tops on both sides with a career-high 56 assists while adding 20 digs and four total blocks. Lexie Campbell (Solana Beach, Calif.) made her Ivy League debut in the fifth game of the match, proving to be the spark needed for the victory.
The Big Green will be on the road again tomorrow with a 4:00 pm match at Cornell.
