PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Dartmouth men's and women's squash teams both dropped their second Ivy League matches of the weekend to Penn on Sunday. The men had a hard-fought battle but the Quakers came out on top, 5-4. The women were unable to crack Penn as the Quakers were victorious, 9-0.
On the men's side the Quakers and the Big Green entered the final round of matches deadlocked, 3-3. Andrew Boumford and Nick Sisodia were both victorious at the top of the order as Michael Lewis and Luke Lee were also winners at Nos. 5 and 9. Penn picked up 3-0 decisions at No. 6 and 8. Trevor McGuinness and Ted Newhouse battled at the No. 3 spot of the ladder in one of the early matches of the day. McGuinness took the first set, 9-2, as Newhouse won the next two, 9-6, 9-2. McGunness then rattled off two 9-2 games to capture the win.
With the match tied either team would have to win two of the three remaining matches to take the victory. The matches were being played simultaneously on adjacent courts and all were becoming epic five game clashes. The first to finish was Thomas Mattsson's match against Andrew Boumford who worked back from a 2-1 deficit to take the final two games, 9-7, 9-5.
Nos. 4 and 7 also came down to the wire as Dartmouth was able to go up 2-0 on both Penn players.
For the women matches one through seven were all decided in three quick games. After easily winning the first two games, Penn's Allie Friedman dropped the next two to Heather Binnie before a fifth set battle that went in Friedman's favor. At spot eight on the ladder, Anita Sellers and Danielle Fuschetti traded games to take the match to a fifth game and it was Fuschetti who was able to take the final game to prevent the shutout for Dartmouth.
Both the men's and women's teams will head into post season play. The 11-7 men's team will battle at the CSA Championships held at Princeton on Feb. 20-21 while the 7-8 women's team will head to the CSA Championships at Harvard on Feb. 13-15.
