The Dartmouth women's hockey team had its 28th member join the exclusive 100-point club on Dec. 17 against Harvard as senior Maggie Kennedy notched the milestone in the first period of her 108th career game.
“Maggie has been a great player for us through her four years,” said head coach Mark Hudak. “Her recent accomplishment of reaching 100 points was exciting for all of us.”
Kennedy has been a mainstay on the top lines for the Big Green in her three-plus seasons in Hanover. Going into the holiday break she led the Big Green in points two of the three season played and currently is atop the points column with 17 points this season, including a team-high seven tallies.
She led Dartmouth in points in her freshman season with 24 points in 29 games played. She posted eight goals; six on the power play and four were game-winners, while posting a team-high 24 points. She became the first freshman to lead the team in points in 24 years. The last time it happened was back in the 1981-82 season when Estey Ticknor tallied 28 points as a first-year player.
Last season she was the Big Green's most consistent player with 39 points with 16 goals and a team-high 23 assists. She also posted five power play goals and one shorthanded tally.
“Maggie is a great team player, supportive of all of her teammates, and has added to the positive legacy of Dartmouth hockey in many ways,” mentioned Hudak. “It's been a priviledge to coach Maggie for four years.”
Why Dartmouth?
Dartmouth seemed to have everything I was looking for in a school. The college provides a great education, great hockey program, beautiful campus, and amazing people. Everyone was so warm and welcoming on my recruiting trip and so passionate about every aspect of Dartmouth and I wanted to be a part of that. I couldn't ask for a better place.
What it is like to record 100 points and do you remember your first point your freshman year?
It's a great feeling and I can attribute much of that success to all of my amazing teammates. I don't remember if my first goal was my first point, but I clearly remember my first goal. It was against Wisconsin freshman year. Around the 11th game into the season, I came out of the penalty box and was on a breakaway. I didn't even have time for a move so I shot it at the net and it just trickled in past the goalie ... haha I got really lucky on that one.
Who would you want to play you in a movie?
I would want Sandra Bullock to play me in a movie. I think she's a great actress and really funny and I loved her in Miss Congeniality. It looks like she has a lot of fun with all the roles that she plays.
Dinner with anyone, past or present, who would it be?
That's a tough one but I'd have to say Sydney Crosby. He's the captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins, 21 years old and an amazing hockey player. I would love for him to give me some pointers and then maybe I could get him to take me out to dinner again, he would be quite the catch.
Your favorite memory as a member of the Big Green?
I have so many memorable moments as a member of the Big Green: winning ECACs and the Ivy League title in front of an amazing home crowd; beating BC 4-0 this year after a heart breaking loss from a few years back, to name a few. However, I think the most memorable moment would be beating Mercyhurst last year 6-4 after losing to them 7-0 the night before. All of these memories are so much more special being at home in front of amazing fans.
What sport would you like to play other than hockey?
I played softball and soccer along with hockey pretty much all my life. Last spring I played club lacrosse but I would really love to play soccer again. I miss it more than any other sport.
Who got you interested in hockey and when did you first put on skates?
My dad and my brother, Robbie, got me interested. I first laced them up when I was about three years old and haven't stopped since.
What is your favorite road arena to play in?
No arena compares to Thompson, but if I had to chose I would say Yale. I used to play there a bit when I was younger and since I live fairly close a lot of my family and friends can come, which gives it a bit of a home crowd atmosphere for me.
If you could be a guest star on any TV show, which one would it be?
I would love to be a guest star on Grey's Anatomy. I love that show and I think it would be fun to pretend to be a surgeon for a day.
What are your plans following graduation?
Very good question. I try not to think about that for as long as I can but I would love to continue hockey if I could. If that didn't work out, I would take some time off, maybe travel a bit and explore my options for the future.
