CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Dartmouth women's tennis team went the distance with No. 64 Harvard, but despite a win from junior Carley Markovitz (South Pasadena, Calif.) and three singles matches that went to three sets, the Big Green was unable to pull a come-from-behind win over the Crimson and fell 6-1 in Cambridge yesterday afternoon.
Dartmouth finishes the season 8-14 (2-5 Ivy League), while Harvard concludes a 13-8 season (6-1 Ivy League) with a share of the Ivy League title (Princeton also finished 6-1 but downed the Crimson 5-2 in Ivy League play).
Junior tri-captain Jesse Adler (Winnetka, Ill.) and sophomore Georgiana Smyser (Houston, Texas) won their match at No. 2 doubles, but Harvard won its ninth consecutive doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3.
In singles, sophomore Molly Scott (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) lost in straight sets at No. 1 to the extremely tough senior Beier Ko, who was ranked as high as 300 in the WTA rankings before college and was undefeated in the five Ivy League singles matches she played this spring. Junior tri-captain Mary Beth Winingham (Carmel, Ind.) also lost in straight sets at No. 2 to senior Laura Peterzan, a former Ivy League Rookie of the Year, who helped lead Harvard to victory last weekend over Yale, the defending Ivy League champs.
With Markovitz's straight set victory at No. 5 over the 12-3 Holly Cao, whose only other Ivy loss came against Princeton, the Big Green was down 3-1 with Adler, Smyser, and sophomore Ryan Reichel (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) battling to pull out the third sets in their matches. At No. 3 Adler was defeated 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 by Samantha Rosekrans, who was a 2008 second team All-Ivy singles selection. Smyser lost 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 at No. 4 to Agnes Sibilski, who played as high as No. 1 for the Crimson last year. Reichel at No. 6 battled back from 5-3, 30-15 to win the second set 7-5, but ultimately fell 6-3 in the third set to freshman Caroline Davis.
