Dartmouth Drops Close Match in Ivy Opener at Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y.? The Dartmouth women's tennis team lost a 4-3 heartbreaker today in their Ivy League opener against Cornell. The Big Green is 6-10 on the season, 0-1 Ivies; Cornell is 6-9 overall, 2-0 in the Ivies after downing Columbia 6-1 last weekend.
After getting an easy win at No. 1 doubles from sophomore Molly Scott (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) and junior tri-captain Mary Beth Winingham (Carmel, Ind.), the Big Green were locked in close contests at No. 2 and No. 3. Junior tri-captain Jesse Adler (Winnetka, Ill.) and freshman Carissa King (Charlotte, N.C.) were ultimately edged 9-7, and junior Julia Zak (Bernardsville, N.J.) and sophomore Georgiana Smyser (Houston, Texas) were then nipped 9-8 (7-5) at No. 3 to give Cornell the doubles point.
At No. 1 singles, Scott made quick work of her opponent, dropping only one game to Natalia Sanchez. Adler also won in straight sets at No. 3 over Cornell's former No. 1 player, Liz Googe, and Smyser at No. 4 downed the Big Red's 2008 No. 1 player, Sinziana Chis. The match was knotted at 3-3 after losses at No. 2 and No. 6 by Winingham and sophomore Ryan Reichel (Hilton Head Island, S.C.), who was narrowly defeated 6-4 in the third. In the deciding match at No. 5, junior Carley Markovitz (South Pasadena, Calif.) erased a 2-5 deficit to win the first set, lost the second in a tiebreaker, and fought back from a 4-0 deficit in the third only to ultimately fall 6-2.
Dartmouth takes on Columbia in New York City tomorrow at 12 noon.
