PRAGUE , Czech Republic - Dartmouth women's lacrosse alums Whitney Douthett '07 and Devon Wills '06 both put forth stellar performances to lead the United States to a 22-5 victory over Ireland in the FIL World Cup semifinals.
Douthett had a breakout game with a match-high four goals while Wills anchored the complete-game defensive effort with three saves in goal. Team USA (5-0) will play the winner of today's England-Japan game in tomorrow's first semifinal at 8:30 a.m. EST (2:30 p.m. Prague).
The US trailed briefly, 4-3, early in the contest after Wills drew a yellow card for contact with an Irish attacker. The team settled down and rattled off 15 unanswered goals for the eventual rout.
The US had advanced to this quarterfinal draw against the Aussies fter an amazing comeback win over defending champ and archrival, Australia, on Monday. After trailing, 9-4, at halftime, the US shut out the Aussies in the second for the 10-9 win. Australia defeated Scotland in today's quarterfinal matchup.
Ireland was a newcomer to the World Cup this year and its team was comprised mostly of American players. Eligibility requirements included an Irish-born parent or grandparent.
Wills and Douthett continue to both be integral parts of the US Team in its quest to retake its place as World Cup champs.
