Charlottesville, Va. - Dartmouth senior captain Becky Poskin (Leawood, Kan.) delivered the game-winning goal in double-overtime to send the Big Green past Seton Hall, 1-0 on day one of the Virginia Nike Classic.
"We got stronger as the game went on," said head coach Angie Hind. "It was a great goal to win it, Aurelia put the ball right down the line and Becky came on with a great finish."
The Big Green pressured the Pirates throughout overtime and mounted a furious attack in the second OT period. Just a minute in Virginia native Peyton Tata (Virginia Beach, Va.) nearly had the winner but Seton Hall keeper Jennifer Pettigrew made a big save. The Big Green got what it needed two minutes later at 103:10. Rookie Aurelia Solomon (Washington, D.C.) sent a cross into the box for Poskin who sent home the winner.
It was a physical contest, with the two teams combining for more fouls, 36, than shots, 16. Seton Hall (3-2) had a slight edge in shots over Dartmouth (2-1), 9-7. Dartmouth sophomore goalie Colleen Hogan (Houston, Texas) picked up her first career shutout with four saves in goal.
The teams battled through a scoreless first half in which Seton Hall took six shots to Dartmouth's three but Hogan was impressive, making three saves to keep the Pirates off the scoreboard. Both defenses locked down a bit in the second, with the Pirates holding a 3-2 advantage in shots.
Neither team got a good look at goal in the first overtime but Dartmouth took its two shots in just three minutes in the second period, leading to Poskin's winner.
The Big Green has a big game on Sunday when it faces #12 West Virginia at 12:00 p.m. in Charlottesville.
