WORCESTER, Mass. – Junior Rebecca Sobel (Larchmont, N.Y.) continued her hot start to the season with a hat trick to lead the Dartmouth field hockey team to its first win of the season with a 5-0 defeat of Holy Cross on Sunday.
Dartmouth (1-2) was led by Sobel, who tallied the Big Green's first three scores to give her five goals in the first three games of the year. Joining Sobel in the scoring column was sophomore Meghan Everett (Flemington, N.J.) and senior co-captain Virginia Peisch (Koenigstein, Germany). Everett tallied her second of the season, while Peisch added her first. Sophomore Meagan Vakiener (Port Murray, N.J.) was not tested all afternoon and earned her second career shutout with three stops.
Holy Cross (0-4) goalkeeper Kelly Casey had tough afternoon with just four saves on nine shots on net.
Sobel gave the Big Green the 1-0 lead 9:16 into the opening half with the assist going to junior Claire Byrne (Rye, N.Y.). For Byrne, it was her first point of the season. Sobel didn't stop there as she netted her second of the game about eight minutes later to push the lead to 2-0 in favor of Dartmouth. Sophomore Kelly Hood (Berlin, N.H.) found an open Sobel at the far post and Sobel was able to connect on the shot for the score. The Big Green went into the locker room with a 2-0 lead.
The second half was more of the same as Sobel collected the hat trick four minutes into the final half. This time the goal came on a penalty corner as junior Kelly McHenry (Williamsburg, Va.) was credited with one of her two assists on the set up for Sobel at the far post.
Everett got in on the scoring act with her second of the year four minutes later to give the Big Green a commanding 4-0 lead. McHenry was involved in the play again and was given her second assist of the contest.
Dartmouth concluding the scoring with under two minutes remaining in the game as Peisch tallied her first score of the year to give the Big Green a dominating 5-0 victory.
Shots were hard to come by as Dartmouth held a slim 12-9 advantage, but was able to make five of their 12 shots count. Penalty corners were about even with the two schools with the Big Green earning six corners, while the Crusaders got five chances.
The Big Green begin the 2009 Ivy League schedule this coming Saturday as Dartmouth hosts defending Ivy champion Princeton for its home opener at 12 p.m. at Chase AstroTurf Field.
