HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth field hockey team dropped its second straight game after falling to Boston University in a tough 1-0 loss on Sunday afternoon at Chase AstroTurf Field.
For Dartmouth (1-4), sophomore Meagan Vakiener pushed aside eight shots in the loss. The Big Green offense had a few chances to score but failed to put one in the net for the second time this year.
For Boston University (3-5), Giovanni Monaco tallied the lone goal of the game late in the second half, while Amanda Smith made two saves to earn the shutout.
In the first half, neither team could get into an offensive rhythm as the two combined for just nine shots with the Terriers firing away six times. Penalty corners were all but even with Boston University earning five corners to Dartmouth's four opportunities.
The second half was more of the same, but Boston University wore down Dartmouth late in the half and outshot the Big Green 10-1 in the final half. The pressure finally paid off for the Terriers as Monaco beat Vakiener after the goalkeeper made an initial save. Boston University found an opening in the circle and put a shot on net that was stopped by Vakiener, but Monaco was there for the cleanup and the 1-0 win.
The penalty corners were well on the Terriers' side in the half with a 5-1 advantage over the Big Green.
Dartmouth had its opportunities on its penalty corner situations, but each time sophomore Kelly Hood (Berlin, N.H.) either fired her shot high and wide or the shot was blocked in front.
The Big Green will be back in Ivy play this coming Saturday as Dartmouth travels to Brown on Saturday for a 12 p.m. start. The Big Green will be back in Hanover the following day as Bryant comes to town for a 3 p.m. game.
