HANOVER, N.H – Once again it was sophomore Kelly Hood (Berlin, N.H.) leading the way for the Dartmouth field hockey team as she posted a six-point game in the 4-2 win over Bryant on Sunday.
Hood tallied two goals and added two assists in the win. Over the weekend, she collected an amazing 16 points on seven goals and two assists. The Big Green outscored Bryant 3-1 in the second half after being down six minutes into the final half.
Junior Kelly McHenry (Williamsburg, Va.) added a goal and an assist, while junior co-captain Virginia Peisch (Koenigstein, Germany) recorded two assists to give her seven helpers on the weekend. Also scoring for the Big Green was Rebecca Sobel (Larchmont, N.Y.) and freshman Maya Herm (Bethesda, Md.) collected her first collegiate point with an assist on Dartmouth's final goal. Sophomore Meagan Vakiener (Port Murray, N.J.) earned her third win of the year with four saves.
For Bryant (2-6), Courtney Landi tallied a goal and assist for three points and Tia Pydynkowski added the second goal for the Bulldogs. In goal, Kundayi Mawema made seven saves, including a couple of great saves, in the loss.
Dartmouth (3-4) got on the board 3:22 into the contest on Hood's seventh of the season coming on the Big Green's first corner of the afternoon. She got a stick-stop from McHenry and fired a shot high and to the right post.
Bryant was not fazed however as the Bulldogs played good defense and even the score with 17:36 remaining in the first half. Landi slipped past the Dartmouth defense at the top of the circle and beat Vakiener on a breakaway.
After 20-plus minutes of scoreless play, Bryant got the lead six minutes into the second half at 2-1 on a goal by Pydynkowski. She got open in the circle and received a pass from Landi and beat Vakiener to the lower left corner.
Dartmouth came right back with three unanswered goals from three different players.
Sobel tied the score four minutes after Bryant took the lead. Hood and Sobel broke into the circle and had one defender to beat. Hood found Sobel past the defender and she beat Mawema to knot the score at 2-2.
The Big Green got the lead back at 3-2 on a McHenry's first goal of the season. Hood put a shot on net that was blocked, but McHenry was there for the rebound and scored. Hood closed out the scoring with 10 minutes left in the game to increase the lead to 4-2. Herm gave Hood a good stick-stop on the corner and she found the net for the second time.
Dartmouth was down in shots at halftime, but outshot the Bulldogs, 14-3, in the second half to have a 17-10 advantage in shots. The Big Green also had nine penalty corners to Bryant's six.
The Big Green will be back in action this Wednesday at Vermont for a 3 p.m. start in Burlington.
