BURLINGTON, Vt.- Sophomore Meghan Everett (Flemington, N.J.) tallied two goals, including the double overtime game-winner as the Dartmouth field hockey team increased its win streak to three games with a 3-2 win at Vermont.
In addition to the two scores from Everett, sophomore Kelly Hood (Berlin, N.H.) continued her great play with two more assists to give her 23 points on the season. Senior co-captain Chelsea Dodds (Hanover, N.H.) scored her first goal of the season, tying the game late in the second half, while sophomore Meagan Vakiener (Port Murray, N.J.) made just one save to earn her fourth win of the year.
For Vermont (1-9), Chelsea Stevenson and Brittanie Booker each added scores, while Megan Maynard had the lone assist on the afternoon for the Catamounts. Kristen Heavens was impressive in net with 10 saves in 90 minutes of play.
Dartmouth (4-4) got down early as Vermont scored at the 10 minute mark of the first half on a goal from Stevenson. Maynard was able to find space in front of the net and dish it off to Stevenson for the score to make it 1-0 Catamounts.
Hood helped Dartmouth fire back to knot the score at 1-1 just 4:20 after Vermont took the early lead. She put a shot on net that was redirected into the net by Everett and by Heavens to tie the game.
The teams played scoreless for the next 36 minutes until the Catamounts gained the lead back at 2-1 with 18 minutes remaining in the game. Booker was able to make her way by the Dartmouth defense on a 3-on-2 rush and beat Vakiener for the goal.
With the score still at 2-1 and late into the half, Dodds picked a great time to record her first score of the year on a penalty stroke to tie the game at 2-2. She helped force overtime and double overtime as shots were about even in the first overtime. Vermont was able to get three shots off to only two by Dartmouth.
The Big Green put the pressure on in the final overtime and it paid off as Everett found the back of the net, five minutes into the second extra frame. Hood collected a rebound on a shot and found Everett open for the score and a 3-2 win for Dartmouth. Everett now has five goals in her sophomore season and is the fifth member of the team to make double-digits in points this year.
The win gets the Big Green back to even on the season and for the second-straight year, Dartmouth is able to win three-consecutive contests.
The shot total favored Dartmouth as the Big Green connected on 22 shots to only nine for the Catamounts. Dartmouth reached double-digits in penalty corners for the second game in a row. The Big Green had a 10-5 advantage in corners on the afternoon.
The Big Green will be back in conference play on Saturday as Dartmouth travels to Penn for 12 p,m, start with the Quakers.
