PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Freshman Liz Blanken (Short Hills, N.J.) scored her first collegiate goal in double overtime as the Big Green made it four-straight wins after a 2-1 win over Penn in Ivy action on Saturday.
Blanken scored with 4:09 left in the second overtime on a penalty corner to give Dartmouth its first four-game winning streak since 2003, when the Big Green reeled off five wins in a row.
Also scoring for Dartmouth was junior Kelly McHenry (Williamsburg, Va.), who tallied her second of the season. Junior co-captain Virginia Peisch (Koenigstein, Germany) and classmate Rebecca Sobel (Larchmont, N.Y.) each added assists, while sophomore Meagan Vakiener earned her fifth win of the year with eight saves in net.
For Penn (3-7, 1-2 Ivy), Laurie McGarvie scored the lone goal with the assist going to Kelsey Tahan. Keiran Sweeney made nine saves in the loss in 95 minutes of play in net.
Dartmouth (5-4, 2-1 Ivy) struck first in the 11th minute of play when McHenry knocked in a deflection off the stick of Sobel for the 1-0 lead.
Five minutes later, Penn answered back in the very evenly played game. Tahan lofted the ball from just inside the circle and McGarvie punched it down past keeper Vakiener to the left corner of the cage.
Tied 1-1, the ball did not find the net for either team for another 78:63 minutes of play. After a scoreless second half and first overtime period, Dartmouth finally connected on a penalty corner -- Blanken inputted the ball then deflected it in past Sweeney.
Shots were about even between the two schools as Penn had 19 shots, while the Big Green recorded 18. Penalty corners also went infavor of the Quakers with seven to four for Dartmouth.
The Big Green will be back in action this Wednesday as Dartmouth hosts New Hampshire at 3 p.m. at Chase AstroTurf Field.
