HANOVER, N.H. - New Hampshire scored two goals within a minute of each other in the early stages of the first half and the Dartmouth field hockey team couldn't recover and had its four-game winning streak snapped with a 4-0 loss on Wednesday.
Dartmouth (5-5) got nine saves from sophomore Meagan Vakiener (Port Murray, N.J.), but the Big Green was outshot 22-9 on the afternoon and the Wildcats earned six corners to Dartmouth's three.
New Hampshire (6-5) got three goals from Meg Shea, which gives her 32 goals in just 11 games, while Whitney Frates tallied a goal and an assist in the win. Joining Shea and Frates on the scoresheet was Kate Collins Smyth, who posted an assist on Shea's second score. Katherine Nagengast got the start in net and pushed aside five shots to earn the win.
The Wildcats got on the board first as Shea netted her first of the contest, 10:58 into the game. She was able to collected a rebound out in front of Vakiener and put it home for the 1-0 lead. Shea would come right back and score her second goal 50 seconds later with the assist going to Frates.
Frates would score her 19th of the year five minutes into the second half on a nice tip in off of a shot from Collins Smyth. Frates was camped out in front and beat a Dartmouth defender to the ball and tipped the ball high and over Vakiener to make it 3-0 New Hampshire. Shea added the final goal with 22:04 remaining in the game as she was able to find her own rebound and as she was falling, beat Vakiener for the hat trick.
Dartmouth will be back in action this weekend as the Big Green travels to Syracuse to play Georgetown on Saturday in a neutral-site game at 2 p.m., followed by a matchup with the Orange at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
